dv9700 - Problems reformatting C drive, laptop wont start

I recently caught a virus after accidentally typing faceboo k. cm instead of faceboo k. com in IE but Avast was able to take care of it. However, after restarting my HP laptop, I was unable to go into windows and it says there's a problem with startup or winload(I forgot). I used the repair startup 5 times, but to no avail. (I'm not sure if the virus is the cause of my problem).

So, I decided to use the Vista recovery DVDs and reformatted the C drive. I put the CD and HP automatically reformatted the windows partition of my drive. After it's done, the laptop was restarted and a dialog box that says "Software is being installed" appeared and there was a progress bar. But, it restarted again before the progress bar has a chance to complete. And after the laptop is restarted, the system says "BootMGR" is missing please restart using ctr alt del. After I restarted it again, a dialog box saying the recovery has failed appear. I tried this twice and failed both. The details of the error say something about QFE is missing or something.

FYI, the last time I used the Recovery cd I was brought to a blue screen (if I'm not wrong) where I can repartition, delete, or create partitions before formatting the drives. This time, I was unable to repartition or delete the drive, I was brought straight to reformating. And I was unable to use the Recovery Disk in the system; I pressed F11 and nothing happened.

What could be wrong, and how can I solve this?

thanks a bunch

Your notebook model? Try using an external tool like GParted Live CD and reformat the drive first, then using the recovery disks after?

My laptop is probably dv9700. I didn't remember the type but it was 17" and it still has the black keyboard. The problem is not so much about not being able to repartition, but I was unable to enter windows and recovery attempt failed twice. However, I'd give the program a try and thanks. If anyone else has any idea what could be wrong, I'd appreciate your input.

The reason I suggested as such because I had the feeling that the drive was failing. Using an external tool can help to see if the drive is still good.

Good lucks.

I tried both the default setting and the safe vga mode of the gparted live but it seems that there was an error. It says could not mound or something.

Does it mean that my drive failed?

I would say so, yes.

Just an update,

Since my laptop has two separate hard drives, one was for C drive and the other was for D drive, I decided to open up the laptop, removed the hard drive with the windows system and switch the hard drive with the windows system with the hard drive that has the D drive in it (data).

I assumed that my other hard drive should have no problem.

So, I then used the killdisk to erase all the data on the data hard drive and then use it as a clean unpartitioned hard drive for windows installation.

So, now my laptop only has 1 clean drive installed. I then inserted the recovery disc and started reformatting the clean drive. However, it was still the same. It finished reformatting but before it had the chance to complete the HP "software installation" dialog box, it restarted and "Bootmgr is missing" appeared.

I have already used a hard drive that's supposedly 100% clean. But the same problem appeared. I found it hard to believe that both my hard drives failed at the same time? Is it possible that the problem wasn't the hard drive but something else?

I would suggest that in this case, you'd need to get a hand on an installation copy of your OS (XP or Vista), boot up from this CD/DVD and perform a repair from the setup menu.

Recovery CDs will not work now.
