Choosing RAM for my Dell Inspiron 6400 need some help please

Hey everyone,

Hope you're having a great day!

I just needed some advice on a RAM upgrade as RAM has always confused me...

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, Intel Centrino Core 2 duo 1.83GHz and Nvidia 7300 GO 128MB.

Current RAM is dual channel interleaved 1024MB total DDR2 SDRAM CAS 5-5-5-15 while in use is 667MHz (memtest+).

Memtest+ reports my FSB to be 166MHz.

I'm looking to get 2GB total memory, I currently have 1GB.

Any advice on what the best RAM would be to suit my system for more speed?

Thank you very much in advance.

Laurence

You will need 533mhz (PC4200) 200pin SODIMM. Just by going up to 2GB, you will see a nice boost in speed. Which OS are you on by the way? And are both of your ram slots taken up?

Hi,

I forgot to mention in my orignial post, my current RAM speed while in use is 667MHz (memtest+).

I'm using Vista 32bit, laptop is working great but I feel like upgrading the RAM to see if it'll increase the speed of 3D apps etc.

Both current slots are taken up (dual channel) atm.

A dual channel kit would be ideal for you. I'd recommend a dual channel kit with a latency of 4 so it will run just a bit faster than your current memory. For example, here's a kit that would work for you that I found on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134660

Wow that looks great, just what I need I think. Shame I'm in the UK as that's as cheap as anything!!! Wow.

I'll try to find the same in the UK, or something close/same speed wise.

Thank you.

Hmm weird, I checked Dell's specs and they said 533. Anywho, the costs difference is minimal really. You can always open it up and google the ram's serial number to find out what exactly you have got in your notebook at the moment. And yes, especially if you are using vista, going up to 2GB is a nice upragde, not just for apps, but everything in general.

Just opened it up, seems I have the 667MHz CL5 Samsung RAM (but just 1GB).

I'll keep it as backup as I've just ordered this: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119284

OK that confirms it then. Enjoy your new ram.

Thanks for your help . I was going to get CL4 but my friend said the difference is not noticeable on laptops, whether or not this is true I do not know, but it had much better reviews and I wanted to give Crucial a try, even though Corsair makes great products too!

Your friend is correct. Unlike desktops, ram timing on laptops really does make that much of a difference.
