CPU and/or GPU overheating in e1705. What to do?

My laptop has shut down abrubtly twice because of overheating. When I powered the laptop again, it would bring me to that overheating warning prompt with the two nasty beeps and whatnot. Since I'm running Windows 7 x64, I wasn't able to install i8fangui, but I found a program called SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) that I'm running right now.

Here are the current temperature readings for everything:
GPU: 73 C (there's a fire icon next to this. can't imagine that's good)
HD0: 36 C
Core 0: 50 C
Core 1: 50 C

I'm going to open my laptop and see if there's been any dust build-up, but I was wondering if there is anything else I should look for or do.

Thanks!

What I would like to know is: what do I need to open up in order to clean out the CPU or GPU? I started taking apart the laptop and suddenly realized I should probably know what I'm trying to get at.

And the temps are now:

GPU: 78C
CORE0: 57C
CORE1: 57C

If someone can reply soon, it would be very helpful. The processor cores have reached into the 70s. I don't really have an option to just shut off my computer and wait, because I have tons of homework and other work to do on it.

A good clean up and applying new thermal paste are the 1st steps I would do.

cheers ...

and actually remove both fans and clean them out. clean the fins on the heat pipes

when you put it back together make sure the fans are operating

Elevate the computer from the surface it lies on. I use bottlecaps at the rear of my laptop to prop it up. This allows more airflow.

for the E1705 normal idle GPU temps were around 55 deg under load up to 85deg. CPU around 35 was normal for me, when running windows 7 x64 you can run IK8FanGUI but to must allow the OS to run unsigned drivers which is an option on bootup. I use readyboot to automatically load unsigned drivers which saves the hassle. I set this to run the fans on low for most day to day stuff which kept the unit cool. These units are known for GPU failures due to excessive heat over time - the ram fails on the GPU which gives memory parity errors.

I put Arctic silver on the CPU but just kept the fins clean on the GPU - is important on these units to keep the cooling working so elevated. These units are easy to strip down so just common sense should be OK when stripping down.

78C for the gpu is very cool after gaming. If that is the idle temp then start cleaning and apply some Arctic MX-3 thermal paste.

i use one of these on both my laptops.
