Acer 8930 is broked :(

Hi Im new here, basically looking for some help.

I last used my laptop friday night, shut it down and rebooted it on saturday after work, only for it to enter startup repair and not vista. It failed to repair the laptop and so it shut down. I tried the F10 system repair and its not there, it just gives be an 'edit boot options' screen.

I have purchased and downloaded a acer 8930 recovery cd but that only seems to be able to work when vista is actually loaded...

So. Ive got a copy of Vista OS, it loads the files goes to the product key screen where my key on my laptop isnt verified. I bypass this as windows says its not mandatory only for it say a file is missing and cannot complete the install

So I have a laptop and no viable way it seems of getting it to work. Im no laptop genius but I can work through one if anyone has got any words of advice....please?

Many thanks in advance

Try the Vista installation again, and call up MS (toll free number) to activate against the COA key on your notebook - don't by-pass it, and see if it goes through this time.

Hmmm, Im posting from the uk. What does toll free mean? And would it make any difference as as soon as I bypass it, it says that a file is missing anyway. The official error message is

Windows cannot open the required file E:\sources\install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are avilable and restart the installation.

Thanks

It is possible that the (copy) disk that you got is being corrupted.

Toll free = no charge calling number. MS does have one for UK as well.

I do believe that my Hard Drive is corrupt, do I take it that it unrepairable? On the startup repair options, it says that a win32 file is missing or corrupt.

If you believe that the drive is corrupted, then the only option is to replace it.

Was Vista format not being able to pick up the bad sectors at installation?

sounds like you are using an upgrade disk. try and get the original recovery media from Acer. It will not ask for any keys, it should go off the OEM bios activation. Plus, you will have all the apps and drivers for the unit installed automatically.
