Is the M1730 / 8800M GTX SLI fully dead and out of the system? - Page 10

I got a refund on the M1730 about 2 weeks ago (usual dead 8800s problem) - took 2 months to get there, and an email to a Dell VP.

Bloody awful service - but the money turned up in the bank

Did they refund the warranty cost as well? Were you given the choice of a replacement system or just a refund?
Full cost refunded including the warranty. No choice of a replacement - it was a refund or carry on waiting.

At least with the refund you have the choice of buying something you want.

Yep - it's just a PITA that it took that long...

Still I evolved - I'm now running a lot of stuff from an encrypted 64GB USB stick with PortableApps It's a hell of a lot lighter than an M1730!!!

Ok, They replaced the cards today.
Seems like they updated the bios to cool the card more.
Never heard the fan that much on my previous card.
It's a refurbished one

Wow, they actually replaced 8800 cards? That's pretty amazing!

I don't know which I would rather have, the M1730, which did everything that I needed it too, and did it well... or the M17x, which is obviously more powerful, but has a crap touchpad, is another couple POUNDS heavier, and is already having problems with the AC adapter staying plugged in.

In all honesty, I think the best computer from Dell I've had is the one I started this whole ordeal with -- the M1710. I'm talking total experience -- reliability, weight, size, respective performance, etc... unfortunately Dell seems to be slipping further into faster at the cost of bigger/heavier/worse battery life/etc...

Yeah the M1710 and the E1705/9400 was great units, and the best Dell ever came out with
post #190 of 216
Agreed, with some modifications you could even run a 7950GTX with it
post #191 of 216
I used to have an E1705 and upgraded to a M1710. It's still in warranty and I plan to keep it that way, best laptop I've ever had.

I just dread the day it dies and I have to go through Dell Hell to get a side-grade (better performance with a loss of other features/bonuses like weight/battery/etc.).

yeah, i really wish i held onto my 1710. the 1645 is pretty nice but who knows what problems are waiting to creep up...

I'm having problems again with this replacement card.
the system freezes randomly with the restart of the nvdia drivers.

Send a mail I would like a permanent solution this time.

Ask for a m17x replacement
That's my intention.

It happened this past weeked, my 8800 died. It's not completely dead but it dies once it reaches it's norm heat. I don't know it's SLI so it works sometimes, it doesn't work othertimes. I'm getting weird images from time to time that shows up on bootup with the Dell Blue Sign messing up. Called Dell and spent about 3 hours on the phone and got a 9800 replacement card in mail, with confirmation and a phone call about it on Monday. I'm thinking I should push for a m17x replacement, but I don't really want that laptop, all of this is getting too big. I need to sell these laptops off and go back to a desktop with a 15 inch standard laptop, it's just not realistic anymore to do SLI in laptops IMO.

Oh and yes we will try the Bake Method of the 8800 to see what happens and I'll post up images of it all and share. Might as well try.
Okay here is the Process that I did. (and yes I'm on my Baked laptop as we speak) First I did an easy bake where I left my oven cracked at 350 on my 8800 and it worked, however I had problems after gaming for about 2-3 rounds on MW2... So WE BAKE AGAIN!!! This time we'll go the full 380 for 8-9 mins in the oven, from start. Below are a few pics of the entire process. And I'll be off to game to check to see how well it works out. I have a 9800 being sent to me so I figuire why not try out the bake method in the mean time. It's quite shocking.

** MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE PLASTIC END SO THAT IT DOES NOT MELT**

HEAT HER UP!!!

Installed again, and WORKING, Off to Testing now, AGAIN DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS IT IS YOUR LAST RESORT, but it does work.

So you are going straight to 380F before placing the tray in? Or a few minutes on the low-end first and then gradually increasing the temp?

Awesome pics. REP!

cheers ...
