m5500i-R3 Random Shutdown

My laptop which I’ve used heavily for 2.5 years has just started randomly shutting down. I’ve read several threads on here pertaining to random shutdowns but never exactly fit the criteria of what is going on with mine.

First thing I did was drop the heatsink off and clean it - new thermal paste put it all back together. It dropped the temp from 80c to 55c. Over heating should be out of the question.

Now even in Bios, liveCD, Windows (until I whipped it) and Fedora all crash after 45min to an hour. Took the battery out and ran just on the power cord, still does it. Does it just on the battery as well. Added a chill pad to it and still crashes. I’m running out of things to try but seems to be consistent as far as how long it runs before it crashes.

Any help or ideas of things to try or do would be very helpful!

**Edit** title should be 'm5500i-R3 Random Shutdown' not 'm5550i-R3 Random Shutdown'. Sorry

What message are you getting on the blue screen when your computer crashes??

No blue screen - it just shuts off. Pure shutdown like it over heated.

Are you able to turn it on immediately after it shuts down?

Yes, normally boots right back up. At first it didn't because it was actually overheating, now it isn't so it boots right back up fine.

This doesn't sound to good. One more try, boot up into safe mode run it for about the same time that you usually do. See if it still shuts down.

Fedora is on it now - but it still hasn't made a difference what I was running. I could play a game that put the processor through some rough processing and it would run fun until that 45min to an hour when it decided to shut down. I could run it in the bios and leave it not doing anything - as soon as 45min to an hour goes by...it shuts down.

What are your CPU temps? It could be CPU overheating that's the problem. What CPU are you running by the way?

Average of 55c. I have a monitor on it and when it shuts off it's never really gotten above 60. Temperate I doubt is the issue - though it might have been the cause.

2.0ghz processor with 4gig ram

It's definitely not a software problem then. How about Hard Drive temps? If it's going over 65c then it's not a good sign.

If that is good, I'm afraid all that's left is a motherboard that's going bad from the constant high heat of the GPU and CPU during long periods of use in the past...

Well considering it does it in bios and on a liveCD boot, then yes, I think it would have to be the motherboard...finding a new motherboard will be fun, or I guess I could just sell the parts on it.

I agree that it's not worth putting all that money to get a new motherboard. You can use the money to by a lot better laptop than what you have now.

Actually I wised up and bought a MacBook Pro right before my laptop crapped out. But was hoping to use it as a Media Center so I can watch Hulu on an actual TV.... Oh well, time to rip it apart and sell the scraps.
