Yeah, I read a lot of posts by people saying to upgrade to the 3-year warranty. But, I could barely afford my current setup as it is, no room for another $300 upgrade. If I did have the $300 more to spend, I'd much rather spend it on a processor upgrade or a SSD.

The extnded warranty can be purchased anytime whle the laptop is covered under the base warranty

So if you can afford it 6 months from now, do so. one repair will make it worth while.

Oh, I had no idea, that information is very useful, thanks. So, if I extend the warranty near the end of the 1-year warranty, I'll get 2 more years out of it?

Oh, I had a question for you guys. I bought the AlienRespawn disk with my laptop, and it's going to be the image of Windows Vista, of course. I plan on upgrading to Windows 7 in the future. If for some reason, I needed to revert back to factory settings, would AlienRespawn still revert back to a fresh copy of Vista even though I upgraded to Windows 7?

yes, if you call Dell before yoour years warranty expires, they can offer a 1,2, or 3 year extension.

If your in the USA they will also be able to offer the Complete care Option (accidental damage)

It really is a judgement call, taking the extended warranty.

You may spend $300.00 and never use it, or you may be getting several repairs done or a replacement.

At this point the M17x is so new there really are not any repair history to base it on.

Laptops as a whole tend to fail more often than desktops.

Me, I look at the price of the laptop I am buying ang if I am spending under 1K then IMO it is not worth spending $ 300.00 on a extended warranty

Spending 2K or above, well then IMO its good insurance to have.

Also considering I travel with my toys, the chance of accidental damage is higher.

Well unless dell has recently changed the policy its been the case for all my Dell Purchases.

Here is a cut and paste from Dells Site

Consider the following before selecting the right service level for your needs:
  • Please make sure your system is still under warranty before purchasing an extension online. If your warranty has expired call 1-866-440-3355 and choose Option 2 for help.
  • You can buy a max of 4 to 5 years depending on the system type, i.e. if your original purchase had a warranty of 2 years you can buy only 2 years extension.
  • If you have CompleteCare Coverage Service or of if your system is not listed, please call 1-866-440-3355 and choose Option 2 for help on your warranty extension.

^^True, one tends to sometimes forget that Dell now owns Alienware.

cheers ...
