Studio 1737 Screen Issues Poor

Thread Starter
Hi,
I got a brand new Studio 1737 for my 18th Birthday in July, since then I've noticed that the screen often blurs and goes fuzzy when running applications that require even the most basic graphics (Solitare for example).
I called Dell, and they picked up the laptop, only to return it a week later saying nothing was wrong with it. Its still blurry.
Since then, I've installed Windows XP, Vista, 7, and even Linux (Xubuntu and Ubuntu). XP, and both Linux work fine, but Vista and 7 dont. its getting really frustrating. Any ideas of what to do?
Here's a screenshot, its normally worse than this. Will upload more pics if needed.

The Intel GPU is only a basic video card, and i wonder if Vista/ Win 7 is simply putting too much strain on it.

if you can repeat this error get a temp reading on the GPU

^^ That's the CPU spec. What is your graphic card?

cheers ...

Well, I guessed that at first, but I found it a little strange that a Dell Studio PC shipped with Windows Vista Home Premium couldnt actually run it.

How would I get a temp reading? Sorry, I'm not that computer savvey.

to check your Video card - goto cotrol panel, System, Device manager - Expand the tab for the DISPLAY ADAPTORS

Thanks.
It says Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Intel has a detailed information about this graphic chipset. You can verify it against your working/gaming environment and see where/what is missing.

Thanks all, turns out the chipset just doesnt fully support Vista graphics. Silly me for thinking a Dell PC shipped with Home Premuim would support it, eh?
Suppose I'll just install XP, should work well on this.

Would not hurt to try. Dual boot the comp first before going full blast to XP.

I've already gone full blast with it, I installed it once to see if the screen problem was software or hardware.
It was a pain to install, the original XP discs didnt support my HDD, and TinyXP kept BSODing during setup, but I found a good installer that got the job done in the end.
I'd install linux if it wasnt for my Zune needing windows

That was quick. So how is the screen performing now?

Well, after an epic battle. Its all sorted. haha.

First I tried installing XP with the regular disc, no luck, it didnt have the drivers for my HDD, so wouldnt even begin the install. Then I tried using a modded version of XP called VOoXP (I think thats what it was called), it had most of the drivers I needed, but was also shaved down to be run on slow PC's. So then I found TinyXP, another shaved down XP, but has the option of adding what was missing. Most of the drivers installed with TinyXp, with a few exceptions (graphics, SD reader, sound card, and Ethernet, although the Wifi worked)

I used Driver Genius Pro to find and install the missing drivers. So now my laptop is zipping along quite nicely, doesn't have the overall beauty of Windows 7, but certainly has the functionality.

Are they SATA disks? XP hasn't a scooby what they are, so you have to remember to have the drivers ready. On a desktop, you can just have them on a floppy, but on a laptop you may have to slipstream them onto the install disk first.

It's a pain in the ass to do. Even more so when you just storm in and forget to get the drivers.
