Sager Video

I have a question about the video, i was talking to one of my friends today and i mentioned to him that i was thinking of getting the 8887, i told him about the video and, from what i understand its kinda on the low end compared to desktops obviously. He asked if you could upgrade the video putting in a new video card.

If this is possible i wouldn't it make better sense to put in a top of the line card if people are paying about 3500 for a laptop?

If i get flamed then i get flamed but its just my 2 cents.

This kinda stopped me from putting my order through, im now thinking of just getting a normal one to do general stuff while im away from home, i can put in a USB tv tuner and the MP3 player isnt that big of a deal to me.

I really like the DJAudio thing and the full keyboard, speed. Can anyone recommend anything, i was looking to purchase a sager.

Ill probably use it to play some games like BF1942 and stuff.

Thanks

It would make sense, but this cards are mobile, so putting in a desktop video card would require more power, more cooling, more space, you know what i mean.

My tip, wait for the new m10, a radeon 9600 in a mobile form factor, capable of beating the new nvidia ge force's fx.

Ummm,

that kinda answers my question but kind not, sorry.

I was wondering if i purchased my 8887 now that comes with the ATI9000 128 MB if i could upgrade it later to the 9600? or any other model after that.

Or would 8887 owners have to upgrade the whole mobo and stuff, hoping that the chasis doesn't change?

Are these the only options to upgrading the laptop video card to another mobile video card?

I just rec'd my 8887V and am very happy with the screen and the video card {quite a step up from an ATI M4}. Am playing MOHAA and Jedi Outcast II, no hiccups, plenty of detail, and fast.

Although we don't know for sure, we are hoping that the new m10 and 800 FSB / motherboard can be put in to the 8887 as an upgrade. When the m10 comes out their is a good chance you will then be able to upgrade to the next ATI iteration, due to its socket design, where you can pop the old chip out and put the new one in.

Based on what's said in the web and around the forums, the current 8887 with the Radeon 9000 probably will NOT be upgradeable. The ATI M10, however, was designed to be ungradeable with a graphics module that is separate from the motherboard. That way, you can upgrade it at any time. Again, these are mostly rumors, so don't get your hopes up...

True, 8887 owners will not be able to "take out" their M9's and put in an M10, but that does not mean that the whole motherboard cannot be replaced, thus including the M10 as well as an 800MHz FSB (hopefully)...

I think that's what we're all waiting to hear!

Yeah!!

I'm fairly sure that is going to be possible. But I cant help thinking about what we'll do with the spare stuff - the Mobo, GPU, Ram etc...

Can we use this stuff to build a desktop?? it is after all a desktop mobo isnt it??

What I want to know is if I can use this old mobo in a desktop and can the M9 handle an external monitor in the absence of the LCD...

If it is possible can Adam or someone let me know how to do it?

You know what I think? The sad truth will be, by the time you add up all the new components with the labor and shipping/handling, it will cost about $300 less than a new machine (with better LCD?) so we'll all just have "old" 8886's and 8887's laying around while we play with our new 8888's(?).

Not just mobo and video, but we'd need new RAM, too, I bet (333Mhz anyone?).

DOH!

mobo, video, ram, and AUDIO / Speakers! Sheesh, see? it's not even out and I've convinced myself that an upgrade is not the way to go... I'll just have to buy a new machine!

Yeah, I wish... "Honey, what's this $3500 charge to a PeeCee Torque for?" "Uh... uh... my, dear, you sure look lovely tonight!"
