3 questions about aspire 5930G

Hi all.I own a 5930G for almost a year.It has an NVidia 9600M GT and it says "1080p full hd" on a sticker.

3 questions:
  • Using Vlc media player,I have minor sound problems with 720p .mkv files.Particularly, every 3-4 seconds, the sound seems discontinuous for an instant. Is there something I can do about it?
  • How can I check if I have the latest graphics card drivers and if not, update them?
  • This and my former aspire acer model, can only burn a few brands of cd/dvds without error.Lots of common brands, like TDK,philips etc get a failure while burning always at the time that the burning process is beyond 80% complete.I start to think that this is a common problem for acer laptops. Can you suggest brands of cd's/dvd's that work well?in my former acer aspire model,"that's write" were the only ones that I could find that worked 100% of the time. And I had tried about 12 known brands. In my 5930g model,I haven't tried to test a lot of brands yet,but the "that's write" brand doesn't work any more.I have burned less than 10 cds and the problem occured right from the beginning.
  • (edit) my battery life is reduced to a mere 30 seconds. Is there a way to recalibrate it?can't seem to find it in the acer e-power management
thank you for any answers!

- VLC:

You can try this. I set this from 1.0.2 version.

. Tools->Preferences->Show Settings at the bottom left to "All". This will bring you into Advanced Mode.

. Expand Inputs/Codecs; expand "Other Codecs"

. Click on FFmpeg. Change the "Skip the loop filter ..." to "ALL".

. Save and restart VLC.

. DVD Burner:

Sony Optiarc is good for replacement if you want to give it a shot.

. Battery:

Not sure if calibration would help, you are probably just the unlucky one with a bad performing battery. But then 1 year is pretty much open to any batteries for failure.

cheers ...

That was right on the money! The problem is fixed!thank you very much!!
I'll also try the brand you suggested. So you think my burning problem is not abnormal?
Any idea on updating the graphics drivers?
Thanks again!

Driver updates fix issues if you have no issues do not upgrade. The newest driver is not always best for you especially on a notebook. You can't fix what ain't broke. Many do have worse performance/issues mindlessly updating. Some issue fixes do sacrifice performance.

I 2nd powerpack on this notion. Unless there is a good reason, leave it to MS or check Acer Support from time to time for newer drivers; even that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it

Glad to hear that your video playing is better.

We all try to, here at NBF, to exchange ideas - not always on the spot, but our successful rate is quite ok

Update:The problem reappeared and I solved it by randomly tweaking the "Skip the loop filter ..." to "non key".

I have noticed that the playback is not smooth on some 1080p x264 avi files, particularly when the camera view in the film rotates or zooms (e.g. when a big part of the surface is changing). It looks like it's skipping frames or something. Can you suggest of any additional settings I can mess with in VLC to fix this?
(reminder:nVidia 9600M GT and it says Full HD 1080p playback)

I experience the same on some AVI files. Nothing one can do about it but try using another media player with some codecs combination. Not all AVIs are being made following standard Sorry.

Oh ok,at least that clarifies that there are different qualities of avis with the same codec.I didn't know that. Thanks
