XPS M1730 8800GTX SLI FAILED, NEED HELP!

Hello,

I have a Dell XPS M1730 with 8800 GTX SLI still in warranty that broke down. The reason : error code 43 aka one of the video cards is burned. That is what the guys at the service told me right now.

I have been reading the forums here and saw that many of you guys have the same problem and got the option for a replacement, more exactly , Alienware.

My situation is this , my laptop has been in service for more than 2 weeks and today i got an e-mail saying one of the video cards is broken and that they ordered a new one from DELL and its due to arrive in 7 -10 days. They did not ask me anything if i agree or not.

What i read is that this laptop is not in production anymore and so is the 8800 gtx card cause of bad engineer manufacturing.

So right now they offer me to replace the broken video card and give me a laptop that was initially broken. That is outrageous!!!!

I have bought the laptop from a Dell dealer, not directly from Dell and the service is provided from an authorized Dell service firm.

From the dealer i got a warranty that said that if the product is kept more than 3 months in service or if it cannot be repaired i get either my money back or a replacement. I still have 1 year and 6 months left of warranty.

What should i do to get a replacement or my money back?

Who should i call and yell at, the service firm which now is in possession of my laptop and took the option to replace the broken card or DELL directly?

Please, I need your help guys with advices on what to do next!

You have to give Dell the chance to replace the broken card with the same or better card first! It is contractual. Nothing you can do much at the moment but wait for 7-10 days.

Just be patient like many of us here.

Many thx on the quick response.

I have read that the 8800 gtx sli is not in production any more and that they could only give me a refurbished one and i do not agree.

Its not contractual for them to give me a SH card. You pay 3000 Euro for a laptop and this is what you get?

Please correct me if what i heard about the 8800 is not true.

And if those 7-10 day run out, can i start yelling at them then or should i start now?

cheers...

You are in every right to demand and get a replacement of the same specs or better if the unit/part can no longer been offered.

The 8xxx has some bad reputation, so I am not surprised if they are no longer in circulation.

Nope, Dell has the right to "ignore" you for another 7-10 days In the mean time, use that time to practice the yelling.

cheers ...

dell will never replace anything with a "brand new" part, they are all refurbished, they have to be weather they are actually new or not, so you need to realize that. read your contract closely because it does state parts will be refurbished.
the 8800 gtx have not been in production for about 6 months, the 9800 gt's replaced those but they are now not being manufactured anymore either as far as i know...
i myself i have been having lots of problems so i feel your pain...

Refurbished parts are industry standard, not just in Dell, but also in IBM, HP, Acer, etc. When you send the part back to Dell, they turn around and send it back to nVidia as they have their own warranty with them. It's rare to get a new part. This goes for Corporate server and storage support, not just for your laptop. Your warranty states that Dell have a reasonable amount of time to make a repair. I'd say give them a week.
