Setup.exe error (After reformat)

Thread Starter
Greetings all, I reformatted my Inspiron 9400 last night (not the first time doing this) but this time around after the reformat when I try to install programs from any CD I get an error "Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks for your help in advance.

By reformat you mean re-installing OS anew? What is your OS? What is your hardware?

cheers ...

Yes I reinstalled Windows XP SP2 disk that came with the dell.

Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 9400 1.7 Ghz
2 Gig Ram
100 GIG Hd
Mobile Radio x1400 graphics card Hope that helps.

Try running MS updates first, than try again.

Also try to delete the install shield folder under C:\program files\commonfiles

I'd try dave-p's suggestion first. I had a similar problem before and I had to reinstall Windows Installer.

Turns out that something is wrong with the Verizon disk that came with my omnia i910, they are all corrupted. The error happens only when I try to run them.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

before you toss the disk, try cleaning the commonfiles folder out.

CD's typically copy install files over to the boot drive, and if this gets corrupted the cd will never install programs correctly, unless you clean out the files and try installing again.
