M17X replacement for my XPS m1730...

Thread Starter
So my XPS m1730 (specs in sig) had its graphics card burn out and Dell is replacing it with the Alienware M17X (Specs Below).

I have a few questions that hopefully you folks can help me out with:

1. My m1730 had a T8300 Processor and they are putting a P8600 Processor in the M17X. Whats the difference? Is the P8600 better? Will I notice a performance difference?

2. I have Vista Business 64 bit and they are giving Vista Home Premium in the M17X, is there a big difference in the OS? I suppose I can reformat with my Vista Business Disk, but is it necessary?

3. I can buy 4 gigs of 1333mhz ram for like $80, will I notice a big difference between the 1066mhz and the 1333mhz?

4. My warranty is running out on 1/2010 and since the replacment they are giving me is brand new, can I buy another extended warranty for 3 years and pay for it out of pocket?

1. Better and cooler

2. Business is better, but Home Premium is plenty to use. Leave it alone.

3. Faster ram is always better

4. Yes - get the extra warranty asap.

cheers ...

Awesome, good to know. Would you recommend I keep the 1066mhz 4gigs or buy the 4gigs of 1333mhz?

(Also, sorry for double posting )

Thats cool man, you got lucky indeed. I am in the states though and I have a good feeling they have different spec replacements for different countries since most of us in USA who got an M17X have more or less the same specs (Aside from the processors).

...you know, I was thinking about this today. For the people like myself that are getting their XPS m1730s replaced with M17Xs, are the AW M17X we are getting NEW? Or refurbs?

I checked the refurb section for AW and Dell and neither one have the M17X... which leaves me to believe that the ones they are sending us are Brand New... thoughts?

Most likely they are new. My M1730 was new in box aswell with all of extras like the Creative Ear Buds, XPS Screen cloth, Leather case, ETC.

I just talked to a Dell rep, and the news is good. Apperantly, all the M17X replacements they are sending are brand new. They just can't call them new because they are manually put together, not by a machine! So congrats to all of us on the BRAND NEW AW M17Xs!

I can answer #3 in a little more detail. Since the M17x will let you OC the memory you can push the 1066 memory to equal the 1333Mhz speeds. The difference is the 1333Mhz ram will run at a lower latency than 1066 memory when actually using the faster speeds.

Regardless for the best performance with the M17x buy this memory. LINK

First congrats on this being resolved. Congrats it is resolved to your satisfaction. But please read your post several times if need be.

OK you read? Does what the DeLL rep said to you about being new but manually assembled makes any sense to you?

If it does you have spent way too much time in the DeLL warranty grinder. It is nonsensical. As such you really don't know what you are getting.

I hate to say but manual robotic assembly has zero to do with new or refurbished. Also you and that DeLL reps understanding of manual vs automated assembly are not in line with reality.

By that I mean if some guy is manually soldering on the MoBo you do not want that system. Humans cannot do those solders. If you think a PMC is having a robot plug in CPU's on the line I also question if this is reality.

Anyway as I said good to hear they are sending you replacement. And my comments in no way reflect a belief that you will have issues with this replacement. It only reflects that the comment by the DeLL rep is 100% insane. It just does not make any sense.

So just buy the regular 4gigs of 1333mhz and call it a day then? Sounds good to me!
