Abusing warranty?

Is there such a thing as having too many replacements by using the warranty?

From time to time, I see people sell laptops that are broken but still have their warranty. Crazy I know and these laptops go for a cheap price as well. I'm surprised these sellers don't send in the laptops to Dell to get them fixed. Would it be suspicious to Dell if I have numerous laptops replaced in a short period of time?

For example, I just sent in a xps m1530 and got it replaced with the studio 1640. I have in my possession a precision m90 and xps m1710 as well. Would my Dell account raise suspicion if I reported these 2 laptops broken?

Why would/should Dell be suspicious if you are the rightful registered owner of these Dell machines with the proper warranty to back them up?

cheers ...

In the grand scheme of things, you can't have too many replacements made or parts changed out. If you have too many you get red Flagged, and your account basically gets a hold on it. Have I had this happen to me? No... How am I getting this information or why I do I believe this to be true? Well after reading through the forums about the m1730 history, I've learned that Woodstock ( A member of the forums) has had his m1730 parts replaced multiple times, and after X amount of times his account had a hold on it, which he had to call in and get them to fix. It didn't sound like it was too hard to remove that hold, but nevertheless they are keeping watch

Hmm that situation doesn't seem similar to mine because you're having too many replacements with the same system. I'm trying to have multiple systems replaced.

Probably. But I tend to agree with darkloki about the "hold" status that can be expanded to your multiple systems replacement.

I've seen people have numerous machines replaced by Dell and have their accounts put on hold. However, this was for not sending the defective machines back to Dell when the replacements were received.

Well, I bought a used M170 about 2 years ago. Turned out it had Pepsi has been spilled in it and the sound was killed. Then I see it has CC and I transfered the warranty over to me and replaced it with a M1730 and I have had it for about a year and all it has done is overheat, so then I had a 3 month battle with them and they are sending me a M17x, and hopefully, it's cooler than my M1730.

Once you have an order number, it's a done deal. Just deal a note of all issues and be prepared to make complaints/go legal if and when necessary.

I know another member here has his warranty cancelled by dell, and they acused him of Warranty fraud. I don't know all the details, but it was a case were there was several exchages done over a period of time.

So one has to wonder....

I also know some people were purposly damaging thier latops to get a better exchange and they were posting this in the forums...Dell reads these forums, and it did not take them long to put 2 + 2 together. then we noticed a distinct change in Dells handling of some cases.

So i suppose trends are a factor in how cases are handled as well.

Well, Dell offered me both replacements. Replacing backordered parts over and over again costs them more money then a replacement.

To OP the answer to your original post is no. If you are being truthful and honest and the issues are legitimate. No there are not too many. I mean you almost ask if they are willing to sell you such a crappy system/systems should you stop complaining at some point? No complain. Actually an odd question if you ask me.

Multiple systems? If issues the same, more systems means good customer.

Of course they track you. I mean they have to. If they did not make attempts to monitor situations and try and identify potential warranty fraud they would be remiss in their responsibility to other consumers. Remember all costs in the end are passed on to the consumer. As much as I am happy someone gets a fair replacement for a bad machine. I am less than happy when someone breaks their machine at the end of warranty and gets new. I don't care if it only adds $5 to the cost of my notebook. It is not fair. And people who do that thinking DeLL can afford or they are hurting DeLL. Have much to learn about the world/life/morals/and being a good person.

There is no issue with the number of legitimate complaints or number of systems. They might take a closer look to insure no funny business but don't worry.

Agreed. I believe that these forums are here to help people, not help them to defraud anyone.

Heh I remember that guy.

This always happen about this time of year, people come out of the woodwork to report broken laptops once dell is confirmed to be replacing with something new.

No respect to those of us who had to fight hard on the front lines to get Dell to change there policies. If it wasn't for us you all would be get 1640's!!

At least this time it's not Dell's fault but nvidia's with their poorly engineered cards. Sad that the once power house of graphics tech is getting their asses handed to them by ATI again.

yep, i have so far not been able to get any information on what the hold even is... every time i get a hold of someone i get disconnected (hung up on) as soon as i give my customer nuber and no call backs even though i have left 20 messages requesting call backs. i have filed a bbb complaint and done the email bomb thing and still have my nuts hanging out. pretty damn frustrating, i have spent around 15 hours in one week on the phone getting hung up on...
