P8600 vs T9600...

As the title says... huge difference? Reason being is my old m1730 from Dell died (it had the t8300) and the new Alieware I am getting has the P8600. Just curious as to whether I need push for a T9600 or possibly upgrade later on... any ideas/suggestions and/or personal experiences?

IMO you have done well with with this upgrade including the processor. the P8600 has the faster FSB, and lower power requirements. being a newer die, it runs with a lower heat dissapation.

If your looking to upgrade the AW later - Quad Core baby

Thanks Dave, thats what I was thinking, if I upgrade down the line, the Quad Core is the way to go.

In the mean time though, is there a BIG performace difference between the P8600 and T9600?

Like if play a game like Crysis, what would the FPS difference be between the two processors?

the T9600 would definitley give you a boot in over all perfromance over the P8600.

how much - I would guess maybe 10 - 15 % maybe more.

the T9600 has twice the L2 cache memory and @ 17 % increase in CPU speed.

When you say push is this a warranty replacement? If so you are getting a better CPU than you had. Dave's numbers are correct here is numbers on the L2 difference.

Do keep in mind that the 17% clock speed benefit in no way translates to 17% performance increase in games or really most applications but a few. 17% is right on the borderline of even being perceivable on those where it does translate. So short of a stopwatch you are close to not even being able to tell.

All that said of course the T9600 is better in all ways other than thermal output. I agree T9600 might not be an upgrade worth doing later depending on cost.

If you are buying now with your money not warranty I highly recommend going i7.

Thanks for the help gentlemen. It is a warranty replacement so it was more for me to push customer service to up the processor, but seeing as I won't probably be able to tell the difference, I'll leave it as is. Perhaps down the line I will be upgrading the processor with quad core.

The P8600 will OC better because of the smaller cache and it runs cooler. With that said I'd rather have the 6mb of cache that comes with the T9600. If it were me I would buy the QX9300 that HP sells OEM for $500 and install it myself.

For non-extreme procs the M17x bios will let you change both the fsb and memory freq. For the extreme proc you also have the ability to change multipliers. With my first M17x I got a x9100 running at 3.6Ghz and a QX9300 running at 3.35Ghz. Because of that I think I might hold the 3dmark06 record for a laptop.

So since I can OC my P8600, what would you recommend as a "safe" OC speed? I am not looking for anything extreme, but something with just a little more "umph"

A P8600 should be able to hit 2.9Ghz-3.0Ghz.

Thats awesome! Is there a write up somewhere in the forums that goes into details on what kind of things we can do with the M17X?

A mod might know the answer to that one. I created a doc a while ago on how to swap the proc of the M17x. Outside of that I never created anything.

I think I am going to drop the QX9300 from my M6400 into my new M17x

I found out today that if I upgrade my processor, my warranty is void... anyway to get around that gentlemen?
the only thing I would suggest is keep the old CPU and if there is a problem, put it back in. There really is no way of knowing.

from what I recall Dells policy was not to void the warranty, but of course they would not cover any damage as a result of the upgrade. and the upgraded part would not be covered.

If you bought the CPU (or any part) from Dell it is should be covered under the computers warranty, but you need to keep the order number.

I believe keyboard, memory and hdd disks are the only things allowed. That's why I always keep my original parts for warranty purposes. I've never had an issue in the past with changing parts. They don't even question it.

So where is a good, safe place to buy an upgraded processor?

HP has a good price. Go to http://www.partsurfer.hp.com
and search for 507946-001. That's where I bought mine.
