Alienware M17x w/ATi 4870 info thread! - Page 9

Please, please, please! Someone just open their M17x w/dual-4870's and run 3DMark06 at default settings, so I know whether to upgrade my M1730!?!?! I can't find ANY benchmarks of this particular program on the web, and it's the only one I know how to interpret...I get ~12,500 at default settings, and I think I'll sell it and spring for an AW if the ATI cards can do ~16,000, stock or better; otherwise, I'll wait for a revision. Anyone have links to benchmarks, or is our friend the Guru going to be the FIRST person on the planet to run one of these things>? haha.

No others have done it. If your talking about 3Dmark06 that score will be heavily influence by the proc that is used. Someone with the ATI cards and a QX9300 OC' to 3.06Ghz scored 16.7K. I believe his stock run was 2K points less.

I scored 16.8K with my nVidia cards and my proc OC'd to 3.2Ghz...no GPU OC'ing

The ATI option isnt available from Australia Dell yet, so no benchies from here.

Got the machine now. The red is too much for me. I prefer the black after seeing it. It's not horrible or worth returning but the black is nicer.

Now to tear this thing apart and put my own twist on it.

looking forward to the benchmarks and review

I don't mind the Red but I have not seen the Black to compare either.

OK I just put it all back together. The heatsink was in bad shape. I was kind of surprised on how it looked. I took some pics of it but I'm not sure how they came out yet. I gave the heatsink a good lapping and applied some OCZ Freeze. I also applied OCZ Freeze to the GPUs and to the 9400M. I installed the HyperX memory and I'm reinstalling the OS right now. Still can't wait until my SSD comes in.

The pics didn't really come out.

Here's the best one. The middle of the copper is not dust but gashes in the heatsink. I was really amazed when I saw this. Looks much better after I lapped it.

That is surprising indeed,

Good thing you had opened up and checked

Another "defect"?
probably damaged by the person who installed it

I wish they would give me the option to send the machine in parts. That way stupid stuff doesn't happen.

I did one run of 3Dmark06 at 3.06Ghz and it was 16.8K. Once I get this system tweaked I'll officially submit my benchmarks.

Well I have what I consider a major problem and a couple of minor problems.

The big problem is my fsb and memory automatically link at a 1:2 ratio any time you set it above 1250. With my last M17x I had the freedom to set it to anything I want. This limitation is going to limit my OC capabilities which I have a big issue with.

The two minor problems I have is one my keyboard doesn't light up. I tried the standard registry fix then create a new theme but it doesn't work. I also tried the power drain trick and that didn't do anything.

Second minor issue my original SSD I got with my first M17x and almost sold isn't responding anymore. I have a feeling I'm going to have fun with Dell on the phone today.

Been on the phone with Dell for 2 hours. They have determined my keyboard needs to be replaced but they don't want to support my BIOS problem. Trying to escalate it.

Edit: Finally off the phone, only 3 hours. They are replacing my system. Something tells me it won't be any different because it has something to do with the ATi cards. I can't find anyone to verify it.

A quick video of the issue I'm having. This did not happen with my first M17x.
