Alienware M17x w/ATi 4870 info thread! - Page 22

The 4870`s show an impressing performance in Benchmarking. Has anybody compared the gaming performance between ATI CF and Nvidia 280m SLI?

I am going to order a M17x w/ QX9300 but still am unsure if to take ATI or Nvidia. Haven`t found a reasonable gaming-comparison.

Thanks for your advice.

In-game performance will be similar. The 4870 seem to have better driver support so far. No switching drivers because one driver works better than another for different games.

I'm outside doing benchmarks again tonight. I'm pushing 3.4Ghz on my proc and trying to keep it stable.

Sounds good. Thing is, the only test about the gaming-performance of the M17X with ATI 4870 X2 I found is this one (equipped with a Q9000): http://www.notebookcheck.com/AMD-ATI...e.14404.0.html

You have to consider that the tested system with the ATI`s only have a Q9000, yet the results are much worse than they got wit a M17X with QX9300 and 280M GTX SLI: http://www.notebookcheck.com/NVIDIA-...I.17190.0.html

As for an example they ran the Crysis-Benchmark-Tool and got those results (Settings min/medium/max):

ATI 4870 X2: 57,5/53/27,5
Nvidia 280 SLI: 103/64/53

This is a damn huge difference.

I wouldn't put too much into notebookcheck. Don and I both ran the crysis test and the results were similar.

Is it true that you can oc the nvidias easily with ntune or nvidia system tools and that the ATIs have to be BIOS-flashed each time?

For the GPUs yes but the ATI cards are more stable when OC'ing.

Thanks! I can still push it more but waiting for some competition.

Someone asked me for a copy of my wallpaper so I'm attaching it here.

I just bought the game for the PC. I'm hoping there's more to it than the console version.
