Alienware M17x w/ATi 4870 info thread! - Page 26

Cool Thanks for the info. I just bought this thing I doubt Im going to go buy another laptop but Ill keep that in mind. I got the computer up to 3.1 and ran the 3dmark program with a score of like 16782, but then shortly after the BSOD came up and had to reboot it. Im just gonna stick with it at 3.0. Or should I be setting it back to stock for playing games like crysis and FSX?

My M17X is scheduled to arrive in a couple of days, and I have been watching this thread with great interest. As a total Noob to the world of OC'ing, can you guy's tell me how much of a difference I might see OC'ing the GPU's as opposed to the CPU ?? Im speking mainly in terms of frame rates on games like FSX or Crysis, COD, .etc.etc.

Or.......is it a combination of both that gives a better "Overall" boost to my frame rates.

A notebook cooler will help with the BSODs.

I normally play games stock but I don't play Crysis. If you get some lagging you might want to OC a bit to see if it helps.

I usually cap my games at 60fps since I just use the laptops LCD for gaming. I play FO3 which caps at 60 anyway and Borderlands I turn vsync on to cap it. If I played with an external 120Hz monitor I might be worried about more FPS when gaming.

Regarding your actual question it will vary game to game. Testing will be the best way to find out.

My M17x has been officially sold. It was definitely the most powerful laptop I've ever owned. I now game on my M17 until the next "latest and greatest" gets released.

17" notebook with one GPU?...pass. Plus the W90 has been the only aesthetically pleasing system they've released recently. If they released something that looked like the W90 with dual 5870s then I would take a good look at it.

Dual HD5870 ... That definitively would fly. You might want to move to Vermont (33 inches of snow just now) to OC

The wind chill has been in the negative degrees here. Way too cold to bench. I'm afraid for my system.

Raid of course

Next Gen NVIDIA GPU with DX 11

Yes, you can get 10.1 with the 4870s now. Time to move on to DX11. CES is only a couple days away. Let's see what it brings us.

Let's see what Steve will be bringing back. So far all my sources are saying most new stuffs will be tablets, touchscreens, the new IBM core-i3 and core-i5 (to compete with the Atom). The new "gaming" notebooks probably will not be announced until at least Q2-2010, except for those ASUS with the HD5870.

cheers ...

Yeah I will still wait to see what the rest of CES will bring us.

Edit: Now it looks like the ATI 5870 card is 128bit. A single 4870 would outperform it. We'll find out more when released.
