Core i7 mobile reviews

I m looking into buying new laptop, but i'm not orientated onto games but if i try some i would like to play it at least on medium details. I have a Dell XPS Studio 16 in mind . I love it becouse of it's compact housing, keyboard and fullHD RGB LED display. Asus's G50,Alienware,Toshiba's X5xx.... they are all fat and i don't like futuristic design's and those colors on them. I'm looking into core i7 820, ati 4670 1gb, 500gb 7200rpm ....... I know it's somewhere on par with q9200 .How much is this better that let's say config. with 2.4 c2d ? I cannot find any decent review of a core i7 laptop? Do you guys have any usefull links ?Or maybe a dell xps studio 16 with ati 4670 review ?

Thanks

Asus is also coming out with A G51 and G60 revision that include corei7 and ddr3. Corei7 platform was just release so everyones slowly catching on from what I see.

Hard to recommend the i820 considering the small difference in speed vs the high cost compared to the i720. So far if I had to compare the i720 to anything it would be the Q9200 like you suggest. Im a huge fan of RGBLED and the 16 inch one has no closest competitor. I really wish they would offer that screen on the m15x at some point in the future.

At the end of a month i'm going to dubai and i'm hoping to find 820 but if i don't i would be pleased with 720. Asus G51 by spec is almost 1cm fater that dell and i'm looking into compact notebook . But i'll decide when (if) i see it with my own eyes(is it to big)My uncle has a asus g50 something (c2d, 4gb, 9700m gt), orange one and it's too big for me . Is G51 similar ? Asus also has a backlight keyboard , 15.6'' LED display so now i guess , i'm having three contendors . In asus ,very attractive thing is gtx260m , becouse of it's power and CUDA option

in dell xps i'm mainly affraid of graphic performace. I saw that almost every game today is playable @1280x800 on high/ultra setting except crysis of course . I haved played games for almost 2 years (except my adiction to GTR EVO and nordschlaife , in which i hold 5th fastest time (fastest in my country) even playing on acer aspire 5500 with x700 graphic and limited to 14'' lcd becouse my vga output died afted short circuled , so i'm hoping to break world record on my new notebook. Whou gone of topic -.-' . What setting can i expect to be playing NFS Shift and Race PRO with ati 4670 ? I'm more into racing sims

I used to feel that slim notebooks in the power level had a drawback to its performance. It was irrelevant that say an ASUS or a DELL had a powerful videocard because if the cooling system was poor then you will barely be able to use it at default stock settings without the notebook clocking down to slower speeds. Apple and Dell are huge victims of this and no longer ship power house videocards in small notebook bodies. You have to honestly ask yourself if having a slightly lighter/slimmer notebook is worth losing performance over. I had what would be considered the most powerful 6lb notebook on the planet but its inferior cooling system handicapped it constantly (Dell Precision M4400) I jumped onto a much heavier and larger 15 inch notebook the M15x Alienware and the difference is night and day.

To get to the point although the studio xps is slightly larger in the end you will enjoy the 4670 with i7 720 as it will fit the bill just right especially considering how much more powerful the i7 is compared to the core2duo clock for clock.

ok. That's what i wanted to hear . One last question . Is XPS 16 equiped with MXM slot for GPU ? I watched those pictures on anandtech but there is some plastic covering that area so i cannot figure out :S . In future if 4670 becomes slow i might upgrade to 5670 , gts 3xx

wouldnt matter if they use industry standard MXM parts if the motherboard doesnt have BIOS support it wont work either way.

How does then desktop pc's work ? For example i can put HD5870 on s939 motherboard and it will work? The only senseable reason for notebook not working, is if replacement GPU is consuming too much energy and notebook power suply is not capable of delivering it ?

Desktop PC Bios does not have the constraint as in notebook BIOS. You cannot compare GPU swapping/upgrading of any desktop PCs to notebooks. It simply does not work that way - blame that to notebook manufacturers.

In the past even when DeLL did not solder GPU to the MoBo they used a proprietary variation of MXM making GPU swap with other than DeLL GPU all but impossible. What they do know I do not know.

On the general topic of BIOS support of mobile GPU's. In the past on some DeLL's you could switch from ATI to Nvidia. I think if the connection fits there are options. But compatible connection is not the final hurdle. The GPU itself must physically fit. Notebooks are not generally modular in construction as desktop components are. That is an obstacle to swapability. Yes that is the goal of MXM but has not by any means been 100% successful.
