Help! Have to choose between Asus & Vaio

First of all, one big HELLO to all of You wise Ones!

I'm about to buy myself a new laptop and these last couple off days I was trying to find some interesting ones... so, at the end, here I am... trying to make up my mind...

This one:

ASUS N70SV-TY043C

Or maybe this one:

SONY VAIO VGN-FW41M/H

What would You guys suggest me?

By checking the specifications, I could see that many of them are the same, but still, some are not....
.... so now I'm asking You experts - what would be Your choice here?

I've never had any experience neither with ASUS, nor with SONY VAIO laptops, so maybe You could tell me which one could I trust more?

SONY is a bit more expensive, around 80 euros, but price doesn't matter in this case. I just want to buy one that is better... if SONY VAIO is the better one - I would not mind paying those extra 80 Euros as all.

Greetings and thanks in advance!

I would personally go with the Sony FW in this instance. It is a good model with good performance. €80 extra is worth it.

cheers ...

Gonna agree with qhn on this one the sony blows the asus out of the water with a higher end dedicated videocard and a richer screen.

Thanks for the answers, mates!

I forgot to put some more information about what I am gonna need this laptop for...

So... since I'm not some gamer or something, this laptop will be used only for my job, and I work as an architect, so - I will need a laptop that can keep up the good performance during permanent usage of the software such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, 3ds Max etc...
So knowing this now, you still stay by your opinion that Sony Vaio would be a better solution in this case?

( I have to admit, I'm a bit confused these days, because during this internet surfing I saw so many different opinions, and usually people were putting ASUS in front of the other laptops, and usually said that ASUS is more experienced in making these good models etc.)

Cheers!

Don't let it fool you, the Sony FW is a good performer and can game very very well

So, CAD apps will be a breeze.

cheers ...

Thanx once again, mate!

But just in case I decide to take up this Asus one, because of the screen 17,3 inches for example, what would be your opinion about it?
Is it worth of investing money in it?

Regarding these specifications - it did not look bad at all the fight sight.

Does anyone of you guys have any experience with this model?

It is a personal preference as which notebook one is going after. Sometimes a larger screen can be a deciding factor over others :-)

Asus is a good brand.

cheers ...

Generally my personal experience with asian designed notebooks like the ASUS is that the housing is little more frail but they excel well for the bang for buck when it comes to performance.

Thanks a lot for helping!

I'll keep checking this thread these days... maybe someone will add something... or maybe, some of you out there already had chance to try one of these two laptops.

And can you name me non Asian notebooks? That aside both these are clearly Asian so that info even if valid seems of no point in current discussion? Just thoughts please clarify as I am missing you original point regardless of this discussion.

Does Sony even make notebooks? Asus does.

To OP the Sony does offer some benefits as others have said. GPU and screen resolution. I do not use CAD but my understanding higher resolution is preferred for that. It is also desired for Photoshop.

I think either could work for you. I lean toward the Sony even with the increased cost. €80 for better GPU and resolution is well within the cost you expect to pay for such.

Good luck.

That's what I was thinking! My best guess to what Yoob was saying is that there are differences between notebooks designed by, for instance, American companies and ordered through ODMs in Taiwan or China and notebooks designed by Taiwanese or Chinese companies and either built themselves or ordered through other ODMs. However, your point that Sony is a Japanese (and hence Asian) company still stands regardless.

Maybe I am wrong but I believe DeLL, AlienWare, HP and the rest design the exterior of the box at best. All the real design is done in Tiwan. Oh Asus makes Apples. Apple may say what they want but that is not design in my opinion.

So back to what non Asian design notebooks are there?

Like I said I could be wrong that is why I want to know.

Djembe glad you like my funny.

Hehe... guys, I know this is your field here... and I know that your amount of information simply needs to pop out, but I beg you, even when you are talking about these things like above, leave place just for one little sentence at the end which will convince me more what to buy

I will agree that most of the "work" is done in Taiwan, but there is still some design work that the big shots do, as I understand it, even if it is just dictating what the exterior should look like.

Regarding Apple, most of their notebooks are made by Quanta. Asus only makes one or two models, last I heard (and technically now they don't make any - Pegatron does )

To me if they cost the same the Sony is the clear choice. Further I think €80 is very fair price difference. What I don't know is what does €80 mean to you? If it pushed budget I might say go Asus. If it is not a strain I say Sony all the way.

Sorry we're losing you in the technical stuff!

I agree with Q and powerpack. Get the Sony. It's got a notably more powerful video card, and that's worth the extra cost, in my opinion.

I meant to post back yesterday and forgot. The Sony has a BR reader. I mean just more for the Sony that is just a nicer equipped system and the cost is good.

Thanks for help, guys!

I'm getting close to decide, and I think my choice will be Sony, since most of you "voted" that way.

I just hope that Sony Vaio laptops are stable and solid ones, without some major, habitual and frequent problems.
The main knock against Sony's is their price. In this case a good price. They are not poor computers but Asus are not either.

Just the fact you said "Help", i would say Sony. Asus support sucks and with ODM, you have even less support.
