Help with FPS during games on G50vt

Hi everyone,
I came here looking for help. I have a G50vt that used to work great, no problems with any game. Now when I play any game the frame rate drops so low I can't play the game. If I pause any game for a few minutes and let it sit for a while or minimize the game a few minutes and come back it works great for 5 minutes or so then I have to rinse and repeat. I'm fairly experienced in computers and have built many desktops but this problem I cant get a grasp on. I have all updated drivers, tried running in XP mode, messed with the graphics settings and even re-installed the operating system through the recovery discs and nothing did the trick. I've been sceptical of opening it up since I wouldn't know what to look for.

The oldest game I've been running is Hellgate London and it works the same as Fallout 3, same problem.

Any suggestions comments or suggestions to point me on my way?

One last thing, I spilled beer on my keyboard months before this problem occured and have been using an external keyboard since the left side of the keyboard doesn't work. I hope the sugar in the beer didn't melt it's way downward

Don't want to jump off my seat saying "sure, it's the sugar"

Some suggestions:

- checking out games patches?

- try different version of graphic drivers. NBF Mobile Force has a good version at the moment, check out the section for your OS.

Hi I did a repair on a laptop that had spilled beer on it. It wasn't pretty. It had all sorts of wierd problems. The open traces on the mobo were actually electro plated and it had some traces that were worn down to a couple of mils wide. If you spill drinks on your computer it is always best to tear it apart to clean it.

Have you tried contacting Asus? They have an accident warranty that looks good, but I dont know what it covers. I do my own repairs on my laptops so I dont bother with warrantys. most of the time I void them doing some kind of mod as soon as i get a new laptop.

In the case above I replaced the motherboard it was too far gone to fix even for someone in the circuit board buisness.

If you want to try to fix your self there is a pretty good teardown manual floating around on the web. The only problem is finding parts. Asus laptop parts are hard to find outside thier service centers.

The accident warranty covers "spills, drops, fire, and surges", if I remember correctly. So yes, that would be covered.

Monitor temps with HWMonitor to get min/current/max temps. The way this demonstrates is over heating. Yes it could be related to the spill but might not be. Try and rule out or in over heating.

The g50 keyboard is somewhat a water resistor. They made the keys pretty snug up plus the Gpu and cpu and mobo are on the flip side, seperated by a full metal barrier.

It depends on how much water because most of it would stay on the surface of that keyboard.

Thank you all for the replies. I've been away for the weekend and will try the suggestions. I think the first thing I'll do is open it up and see what's going on inside. Keep you updated and thanks again

EDIT: Actually I went with the hardware monitor first since it was the easiest. I'm not sure what the baseline is so I included a jpeg of the monitor after I played a game and the massive chunk started. So if someone knows what it means, feel free to jump in

OMFG 110C is not good!!!! the 9800m gs will downclock significantly once it hits 105C so theres your problem. I guess the water did get through. I would take off the heatsink and try and put some fresh paste on there but remember you only need a small amount.

That is pretty warm for GPU temp, even though many would say that it is normal and possible to get that high.

Try some thermal paste, copper mode on the GPU? notebook cooler in this case?

Warm? Is an understatement, But that is the high. The others are OK. I would reapply the thermal paste as said.

Awesome, I actually have some heat sink paste from the old days of sticking fans on cpu's. I'll give that a shot. Thanks again, you guys are great!

When I had my g50, my gpu was overclocked a good amount past 9800m gts clocks and my gpu temps never passed 85C. Give or take 3C and use that as an achieving goal.

Well, the heat sinks on the GPU seem really solidly connected and there is no evidence of my spill on the underside. I left the bottom off and put a couple of dvd cases on the side to jack it up a bit for airflow and played a game for a few hours without chunk. It still got as hot as 103 degrees. I'm not sure what to make of it now since overheating seems to be the problem but the heat sinks look fine.

Removing the heatpipes will void your warranty. There is a yellow sticker on one of the screws to the processor. You have to remove the processor heatpipes to get out the video card heatpipes. I tried to remove the sticker without ruining it and i was unsuccessful. If you dont care about your warranty it is easy to replace the thermal paste. You could also have a bad heatpipe.

Take the sticker off with care, worked for me when I first took apoart my g50 a year ago.

Well, I gave my notebbok to a friend to fix and just got it back, which is why I was so delayed in responding. He took it apart and couldn't find anything wrong with it...translation: he didn't know what he was doing and was talking out his ass. Anyways, I bought one of those bases with the fans in it and it keeps it considerably cooler. I don't travel with much so I guess I'm happy since it does what I want it to do again. I'm going to try to get the heat sink off someday, but for now it works which was the goal.
