i have a hp dv2000 series laptop a friend wanted me to look @ to see if I can fix it. He's willing to selling it to me real cheap ($50). The problem is as soon as you plug it in the laptop turns on. You see lights come on but monitor does not come on and you can see the fan turn on for a second then stops. This happens every time it turns on. He says it everything was turning on yesterday. Any ideas what the problem maybe?

You can try to re-seat the memory, try with other battery and/or ac adapter and see. But usually when this happens, it's either the cpu (with luck) or the main board that is failing.

Does the entire system seem to shutdown with the fan? If not have you tried an external monitor?

As far as the turning on bad power button? Have you tried physically pushing it maybe with some force to try and dislodge if stuck.

And not enough info to give more thoughts at this point. Say more.

in order to get to shut down I have to hold the power key. i have not tried external monitor, but will. I'll let you know asap. as you can see it turns on & off when you push power key it just happens to turn of by itself when plugged in. i did try putting battery in and it dont turn on by itself but still no display (its black) fan comes on for a sec then off you can see the cd drive light up for a couple of seconds also.

update* i have tried external monitor still the same. I have tired taking out memory putting back in still the same
no the whole system doesn't shut down when the fan turns off after a couple of seconds

I know that HP does get the short end from time to time, but I must say that all my HPs are still in working condition - 100% minus the wear and tear. 1xN5370, 2xze4400, 1xdv2604us.

You might want to take a look at announcement from HP fro a possible repair/replacement

Bummer. :-( Time to pick it apart and salvage some $$ with its parts, and get a new comp? Or a new motherboard.

Thats sorta my thought 2. I told the guy maybe he should try one of those trade in programs its got absolutely not scratches dings or nothing looks like it came just out of the box cause he had that plastic sheetstill stuck to it and he's had it since 2007. I dont think it worth my time. Thx this site has been alot of help A+++

Good lucks to your friend. He might get good $ selling it in parts, if the whole comp is in good condition.

I have seen the CMOS battery cause this issue sometimes.

When it first turns on by itself, hold down the power button right away for it to shut off. When it turns off, unplug it and then plug it back in and see if it turns on by itself again or not.
