Sidekick contacts, data gone, T-Mobile says

Reading the news:

"NEW YORK - Owners of Sidekick phones, made by a Microsoft subsidiary and sold by T-Mobile USA, may have lost all the personal data they stored on the phone, including contact numbers.

The companies say the data is "almost certainly" gone after a failure of servers operated by Microsoft wiped out the data. The companies said they hoped to update customers on recovery efforts Monday.

The phones have been troubled by data outages for more than a week. Some users attempted to restart their phones by removing the battery, which erases data on the device. Normally, the data is then restored from servers, but with the server data gone, the device is left empty.

Because of that, customers are being advised not to let the battery completely run down either."

Ouch!

I don't get this. What idiot builds a cellphone that does not have internal memory? This is absolutely ridiculous that the entire contents of the phone are stored externally.

The beauty of "net" storage Give it to MS to botch things up now and then.

Wait, you mean that those expensive phones that can be expanded with gigabytes of data are unable to store data locally and you risk losing it?

Who would have thought?

- Come up with great idea fully depending on something else.
- Force it unto consumers.
- Show stockholders "rising" interest in your idea (not that you forced it anyway.)
- Rising price and "interest" soars.
- More business come in.
- PROFIT!!!!

They did recover the data, but harm is being done to T-Mobil and Microsoft in this end. Left to wonder is the project "Cloud Computing" for users to ponder.

In full here!

cheers ...

Well, I bet somebody is feeling relieved at M$ that their asses have been saved.

Now, regarding that thing about not letting a multi gigabyte data storage capable phone backup it's own information...
