Raid 0 and me...

So I never got the whole concept of Raid. Don't really even know what it means, but I heard it makes things faster

So, What exactly is Raid? Whats the difference between Raid 0 and Raid 1,2,3, etc.

My M17X is coming with a 250gb 7200rpm hard drive, and I was thinking about adding another 250gb 7200rpm hard drive for the extra room.

I read somewhere that if I do it in a Raid 0 format, its makes everything BLAZING fast, but in Raid 0, do I have access to all 500gb (combined) of space?

I am a Raid Noob...

Currently RAID is an acronym for "redundant array of independent disks". Here is a link that explains better than I can,link.

But yes in a RAID0 you will get access to the combined space of both Disks. RAID1 you only get access to half the combined size (if Disks are the same). RAID0 doubles your chances of losing data in a HDD failure but does increase your speed.

Thanks Power! I want Raid 0 for sure at this point. I have a back up drive that I do my back ups on so no big deal if HD fails. Why is it faster with two drives in Raid 0? I assume you mean fast than a single drive with no RAID

It splits the reads and writes over both disks so I believe like 70% to 80% speed increase on a hardware RAID0. You want to keep getting faster short stroke it!

The more spindles you have working for you the more IOPS you'll achieve. I personally would recommend SSD over raid for speed and if you need more data space then just buy a regular platter disk and use it as the second hard disk.

BTW, if you plan to get a second hdd you need an extra interposer and bracket. Unfortunately Dell does not ship it with the system unless you order it with a second hard drive.

Where are you going to buy your harddrive from? I want to get this done too especially since I will be upgrading to Windows 7

Did you buy a 250GB HDD so stuck with that size? I ask because this 320GB WD SB is cheaper, link. You do know 320GB's are faster than 250GB's because of areal density?

Seagates had some issues.

I haven't bought anything yet. My m17x comes with a 250GB drive so I figured for Raid 0, I have to match the size, ie: 250g 2nd drive...

You don't have to but you will lose all advantage. 250GB is not bad but 320GB and even more 500GB are just faster because they pack the data tighter. Almost worth selling the 250GB if it can offset the cost? Two 320GB WD SB $150. Nice boost especially in RAID. 500GB even better but I don't know cost.

Or i could just buy a 500GB @ 7200RPM, sell the 250GB that comes with the machine, and say the heck with Raid 0 and call it a day?

How much slower would a 500GB 7200rpm with no raid than a 2x250gb at Raid 0?

Plus this way, I would be eliminating the added risk of Raid 0

No the larger HDD's are not that much faster vs smaller RAID0. 250's in RAID0 crush all single HDD's. I think 500GB mobile are about 75MB/s to 80MB/s avg. Your raid even 250GB is going to be pushing almost 150MB/s? OK 130MB/s still much faster than single.

I mentioned short stroking? No questions? Areal density? No questions?

Do RAID0 it is faster. If you do RAID with the larger I suggested RAID will be faster. A larger HDD does not overcome RAID.
