I'll just post my benchmarks when I get it. That should convince him.

Performance numbers would sell anybody. Only thing is cost numbers scare a lot of us then add the reduced space and us cheap old men get scared. We ask for a Valium and just nod off to avoid the stress.

Edit: Are you going to short stroke your SSD's when you get? Defrag right away then every week or two.

That was my SSD humor. I hope the newbies know I am joking.

Yeah, no way am I doing SSD with Raid 0, if I were to spend that kind of money, I might as well just buy th Qx9300 from HP and call it a day haha

Slowest part of your PC will be your hdd. Don't need to get raid, just one will do.

So you are saying I am better off keeping my P8600 and getting an SSD drive than upgrading my processor to the Qx9300 and getting Raid O with regular drives?
I am debating picking up a second samsung 256 Gb SSD drive and going Raid as well

Yes but depends on your usage.

Gaming...

... then definitively faster drive is what you need ... :-)

cheers ...

If the specific goal was gaming I would say get the best GPUs you can afford but if your deciding between a proc or hdd upgrade then my vote would be upgrade the proc.

Turmoil NW and I agree on a lot. His last statement about HDD/SSD vs CPU? I think if you get a CPU of a certain level far below a QX9300. I favor a fast Dual Core for real world. HDD/SSD becomes much more important.

Back to HDD/SSD. SSD will give you almost RAID0 transfer. It will crush in RA, but they cost a lot and are smaller. That is the dilemma. What to chose?

To get basic on you. If your CPU loads a train car with dirt and you are the fastest dirt loader? Well if you rely on that dirt being brought to you (HDD/SSD)? You really can't go any faster than what is given to you? Correct?

That is why HDD/SSD is so important. Most CPU's can out pace HDD so faster is better.

GPU is an entire sub system it has it's own memory and processor. Like a computer within a computer. You need to buy the best at point of sale as said.

Anyway Jim Beam is typing for me so if I am wrong blame him.

Well, I decided that I am not gonna fidget with my processor as far as replacing it. I dont need the extra speed and honestly, I don't want to blow more money on the computer right now. This way, my Raid 0 is also covered by extended warranty for the next 3 years . What I WILL do though is:

1. (Already Purchased) 4 gigs of HyperX Kingston memory cas 7
2. OC the processor to 2.8 to 3ghz depending on stability
3. Purchase http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136458
for the Raid 0 and order the hard drive caddy from Dell/Alienware
4. Upgrade to Windows 7 ASAP

I think doing the above should get me more than enough speed to do what I want to do. My question, though, is: Can I buy just 1 hard drive and match it with whatever is in my M17X, or do I need to buy two completley new hard drives to accomplish my Raid 0?

... and as far as graphics card, I have no choice, I am getting the Dual 260m GTXs which should hopefully pump out enough juice for what I want to do.

my M17x came with the caddy and screws for the second hard drive in the second drive bay, so your should as well one would presume

That would be good news. I heard this might be happneing now. I'll have to check it and see when I get mine. I wonder if I should just buy the hard drive directly from Dell so it can be under warranty..
well new drives come with tier own warranty (typically 3 years)

IMO dell charges too much (for the most part) for Drives, Memory Etc

I dont know how any of you cant justify a SSD over an old HDD if some of you will dish out 500 for a CPU or GPU upgrade then 200 for SSDs make perfect sense.

Turmoil yes that HDD looks good for your RAID, brands do not need to be the same to work.

I see your point as HDD/SSD has greater improvement for most real world than CPU. But do keep in mind SSD's still suffer from space issues for many. They just are not very big.
