Linksys adapter inactive

I have a wireless adapter on my laptop. Linksys WPC54G ver.3. When my computer starts up I get a small warning box that says "Hardware ID missing" If I just leave that alone and NOT click OK then I can get online however if I click ok then I still show connected but I have a little box in my toolbar that says WPC54G v3 inactive. Can I do something to get rid of that warning box and fix it? Thanks for any help.

Undate. I have since reinstalled WIN XP and now the same issue. The warning box is gone, the adapter shows up in my toolbar but says inactive. In device manager it shows the card as working fine. I see this same problem all over the internet with no real solution.

The other icon (the two little computers connected) in the toolbar says wireless network available and then when I click on mine and connect it does nothing. However the other icon (box with three curved lines in it) still says inactive.

On the advanced tab for the adapter in device manager should "manage wireless settings" and "WZC Managed Ethernet" be set to enabled or disabled?

Under resourses it shows "no conflicts"

Now come on I know you techys can help. I am dying here!

Yeah, have you checked online for new updates for your adapter? Or, if you updated recently, revert to a different driver.

Also, and although I don't have the same adapter as you (I have Intel, not Linksys), I do not use my wireless card's software to run it. I let Windows manage my wireless card. This option may be in the advanced settings for your wireless card.

Here's a link to Linksys' forum on wireless adapters, including your WPC54G. Other people that have had problems with it have posted there. You might be able to find something. I searched for WPC54G problem yielded several pages of forums. I poked around, but most of them mentioned just re-installing firmware. If you post here, you may even get a Linksys specialist to reply (as it happened on several forums that I saw).

Good luck

Still working on it to no avail. I agree this issue happens alot as you see on all different forums, but the one thing I can not find is a solution. I called Leo Laporte and even he was stumped. I can't help but think it has something to do with the warning box I used to get. Before the reformatt I got a small box that said "Hardware ID missing" If I clicked OK to shut the box I could not connect I got the message adapter not connected. However if I just left the box then I could connect. I don't get the warning any longer but am getting the message adapter inactive! So frustrating because I know it works.
