Dell Inspiron 1545/Vostro A860 Questions

Hope this is the right place for this question...

Can anyone comment on the difference in build quality between a Dell Inspiron 1545 and a Vostro A860?

Build quality should be around the same. Vostro was built more for business use and Inspiron more for consumer.

Very much so. Just the name to get you to pay more

if your still a fan of XP, and dispise Vista as I do, Vostro lines typically still support XP.

Of course with Windows 7, due out next week it kinda makes it all a none issue.

But the Buisness line of laptops will usually support the legacy Operating Systems as manufacters are not alwys ready or willing to spend the $$$ to migrate to a newer OS.

I have also found the Vostro line seems a bit more rugged. and they do offer a 8400GS GPU option, which with the Vostro 1500 I have was later updated to a 8600GT

Vostro is entry business. I don't know these two models well but the Vostro should have a slight edge in durability. I can't guarantee but that is the norm. And was most definitely true in the past Vostro vs Inspiron. So I agree with Steve.

Yea if you need a new notebook that price is nice. I mean it will out perform your R40 but I would not expect the same level of build quality. But for the price I think sure can't go wrong. Your Pentium is single or dual core? If single core strap on your seatbelt and welcome to the fast lane. If not still a big jump. The HDD will be much faster (so much, put that seatbelt back on) and that RAM might help also.

One thing that is wrong is the 800Mhz RAM will not run at 800Mhz with a X3100. That is Santa Rosa platform only supports RAM running at 667Mhz. Not that that changes things but is worth knowing.

I turned the person down because I looked up the model and found out how hard it is to access the hard drive. It's located on the backside of the motherboard and there's no access door to it. So you'd have to remove a whole bunch of stuff to get to it.

Oh and neither of those IBM's are working right now sadly. The screens crapped out on both and I'm now using a Inspiron 8600 with a Pentium M 1.7ghz, 1.5 GB of RAM and a ATI Radeon 9600 128MB graphics card.
