Inspiron 8600, straight to white screen

Okay short version...the missus spilled her cereal on her laptop. Destroyed motherboard. We replaced the motherboard. Then it would start up but then shut back down. Swapped out the video card on a hunch, then we got a white screen with an odd color line through it periodically. We can plug it into another monitor and it works fine so we're getting output.

Would this mean my screen is shot? If so, are there other models that will have compatible screens (17" XPS, for example)?

Thanks guys! Great forum!

Yep, sounded like the LCD is a goner. But I would replace the cable first, just for kick.

cheers ...

To be safe, I would just get the screen made for the 8600 as opposed to a newer one. Also, you would not be able to fit a 17" LCD onto a 15.4" laptop.

If you were to get a newer 15.4" LCD then you would probably have to change the inverter on it (the cord that connects to the graphics card from the LCD) for it to work.

I'll try the cable first. It's a 17" widescreen, though.

Haha I wanted to post up just to say I was poorly informed...it IS, in fact, a 15.4" monitor. I don't know where I got the 17" from...a guy thing, I suppose.

I'd try the cable first definitely. Also, you can do the LCD Built-in Self test (which I beleive the i8600 has) by holding down the fn key when powering the system up. You should see the screen rotate between solid colors (eventually) and that should tell you if the LCD is in ok shape. Cables are $25 or so depending on model, so it's definitely not a big risk to take.
