17 inch Video Card Compatibility - Page 3

Thread Starter
While this thread is still rather junky, I've cleaned it up a little and made it easier for newer users to understand by listing cards that are not recommended in a different section.

any news on the m6300 yet? my 3600m fried recently and i need a replacement!
Have you tried baking the FX3600 GPU
My 3600 still works and boots into windows, but upon bootup and in bios i get jagged lines, and the card isnt recognised in windows, is it really worth baking it?

There's nothing to lose. I baked my 7950GTX a good many times before it finally passed away. Dont forget to remove the heatsink and pipes before proceeding !

Precision M90 and Precision M6300 doesn't accept ATI X300

I tried both of them, and they cannot even start (or at least no video at all neither on screen nor on external monitor, cannot remember).
X300 as itself is good (works in I-9300).
Can anybody advise something?
I have a shell with M90 mobo, M6300 mobo, video X300 and all the stuff such as CPU/memory/screen/housing etc.
If anyway I succeed using X300 on M90 or M6300 mobo I will get a laptop instead of a junk shell

You follow this?

Alternative 9400/E1705/M1710/M90 cards**
ATI X300
ATI X600
Nvidia 6800 go vanilla
Nvidia 6800 go Ultra (heatsink mod)
Nvidia 7800 go GTX (heatsink mod)

...

**Please note that these cards also work with the 9400/E1705/M1710/M90 however they are not recommended. There are problems with both their function (see posts 17-23) and, in the case that the card has a dualpipe heatsink, its footprint/form factor. If the card on this list you intend to use for the 9400/E1705/M1710/M90 is dualpipe then you will most likely have to take the original heatsink off the card and replace it with a heatsink from a card recommended for your system (see recommended card list above).
And also checking out post #17-23?

cheers ...

Well, the driver problems as described in posts 17-23 is no matter for me just now because I cannot even start the card (no POST on the screen). I believe that 9400/E1705 accept X300 and was sure that M90/M6300 will accept it but I failed

just wanna say thanks!

I went ahead and baked it for 8 mins at 200C and now it works, no errors and it recognises it in windows. I'm gonna take good care of it now and monitor the temps.

Hello, recently i bake my 7900GS, and past two weeks and fail again, and i must re-bake it again. i'm searching for a new VGA on ebay and my question is if i buy 7900GTX or 7950GTX, should i buy a new AC adapter? i have one , is PA-10 http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Adapter-DF266-LA90PS0-00-Family/dp/B003AFTJP4
post #52 of 59
I don't see the need of a new adapter just because you are replacing the GPU.

cheers ...

The 7900GTX and 7950 GTX definitely require a better PSU. People usually get the 130w one. That's what I did following recommendations on this forum.
I see. Not so sure about the notion that Dell comps run better with a 120W (or more) adapter though myself, but it does not hurt

Finally, i must buy the new AC adapter or no? xD. 7900GTX it have less perfomance with a 90w adapter?

What is your current adapter output? 60W? If you fancy it then go with the 90W that you mentioned above.

Just think about what does the adapter really do - running on battery alone would it die just because of the GPU or CPU upgrade? May be it would make more sense to get a stronger battery to go along with it, non?

My personal feeling in this case is no. Hope others can chip in their ideas.

My current adapter its 90W and i have a 7900GS and works fine, but i wanna buy 7900GTX and i don't really know if i need a new adapter when the GPU works in a full capacity(eg: Games)

I am confused. The link you gave us above is for another 90W adapter. Replace the GPU first and see

Can anyone tell me if a X1400 from a 1505 will work in a 1710? I have my original heatsink if I can use that. Just wondering if I can make it work? Thanks. We watch TV on this laptop in the kitchen and dont need a high end card.
