What should I ask for to get the best replacement possible? i've been doing some reading and people say they usually get the Studio 17 as a replacement and its usually brand new..

Thoughts?

Looks like either a Inspiron 17 or a Studio 17.

i use the firewire (IEEE 1394) port for my external harddrive...the inspiron doesnt offer this port. If they tried to give me that one, do you think i could get a studio?

Yeah, of course. The best thing to do, is to be firm and VERY patient.

You're kind of screwed on the video since your original has only the intel GMA... but my advice is to pick at every nit on the offered replacement that doesn't match what you have. Firewire is a good place to start. You can see my own E1705 replacement thread for my own ordeal. Good luck! I'm still waiting for mine, which is in production.

people generally get NEW systems and not refurbished ones right? i know it says/they say they do refurbished, but all ive seen so far is people getting brand new systems. Right?

I had a M170 and it got replaced with a new M1730 and now that is getting replaced with a new Alienware M17x. But you can never tell.

thats not too shabby.

What do you all think should be the minimum specs i should accept via the Hard drive, memory, graphics card, and processor? I'm just trying not to get something worse then i got right now.

Usually when you get the right model sent to you they get you slightly better specs then you have now. When you get them just post them here, we will be glad to help!

The advice I got here was very helpful to me, and I'll be happy to toss in with my own to help you out... Just got to remember to not accept any single spec that's less than your current machine. When they put an order up on your "My Dell" page, post it up here and we can pick at it.

cool thanks. so when you say the "my dell" page, are you referring to the "support history and status" page right?..just want to make sure i'm looking at the right page.

oh yea, what kind of warranty do they usually do when they ship out a replacement? i know your old warranty transfers over, but is there not an additional year or something?

They will send or call you with an order number. Then you go to Order Status on the Dell page and it tells you everything you need to know.

As far as I know, only your original warranty transfers... they don't give you any additional warranty. Mine died for the final time with only 8 days left on my warranty! I extended for another two years... money well spent, imo. 250 bucks to replace a 1500 dollar laptop is worth it. My extended warranty will transfer over to the new service tag.

Edit to add: When you're talking with the Dell reps... be courteous and polite, but demanding. You'll fare much better without a combative tone. Ask to speak to the next higher level when you feel you're not getting anywhere. I also feel that using the support chat whenever possible is best, because then you have an exact paper trail of what was said.

notebookcheck.com is a great place to check specs on components to compare new to old.

Imma tell you the bad news part of it, seeing that you have an integrated gpu i can only imagine you receiving a:

Studio 1735-37
Inspiron 1720-21
Vostro 1720
Inspiron 17

That firewire argument will probably get you a very small leverage. I remember people arguing about their e1705 how the studio had hdmi and no dvi out. I don't think that argument got anywhere.

Just a note if are arguing for a IEEE 1394 the inspiron 1720 has IEEE 1394 I believe. So if you request for it they might send you a 1720-21 inspiron system. If IEEE 1394 is what you need.

Dell doesn't always send you a brand new system, they also send you refurbished systems. I used to have a e1705 and they sent me a refurb m6300.

ehh i guess ill just wait and see what they say...ill definetly post the stats here once i get them and you all can advise me of their replacement.

all i know is that i will not settle for a smaller screen size and i wont settle for no firewire (got an external hd and the connection is soo much faster with firewire than usb.

Try for the studio 1747. This is a new system that has a sub woofer like your 9400. I had my 9300 replaced with the 1737 3 months back and really missed the sub. The sound on the 1737 sounds like ass. When the 1747 came out I called to see if I could get my replacement exchanged with the new system because of the sub. They told me that I had had my replacement too long and they could not do an exchange. I did get them to send me a 5.1 surround sound system. I am pretty sure that if there were some in the outlett I could have gotten one.

I really think the subwoofer argument may work to get the 1747 which is a great system. i7,ddr3,led screen.

All replacements are refurbished/cancelled orders. Not sure if the 1747 has shown up in the outlet yet.

thats a good point...the subwoofer and firewire together should be enough to bump it up to a 1747.

ahh this waiting is killing me. this whole thing started on thursday, so when should i hear something by? they said it usually is 5-7 business days to get a replacement..so should i find the stats out by tuesday?

It took 2 full weeks before an order showed up for me.

I doubt it. But I was able to do this. I had an e1705 whose graphic card had crapped out several times and they decided to replace mine with a Studio 1737. The only problem was that the 1440x800 is nowhere near the 1920x1200 Truelife I had on my e1705. I demanded that I get a computer with a 1920x1200 Truelife screen as that's why I had purchased the e1705 to begin with (the truth). Next thing you know, I get a replacement currently on the way which is an XPS M1730. Good specs too, though the transformers, kiddy look repulses me. I guess, all in all, its a good replacement, though I would have liked the professional looking 1747. The XPS, however, is supposedly the highest build quality, so I'm happy about that given the Dell Studio I am current using until the M1730 comes is definitely not a great build quality (And it was built new for me).
