e1705 replacement---need advice - Page 2

I don't think the fire wire argument is gonna hold much water in your argument unfortunately. I do realize that it could be somewhat of a big deal depending on your personal uses for the computer, but to a dell rep behind a phone line, it doesn't matter. Just try to make sure that the parts inside of the new laptop are better than or equal to that of your current laptop.

Also, in my experience with laptop replacements, you shouldn't go looking necessarily for a new laptop, back when my Inspiron 9300 was replaced with an E1705, almost all laptops were being traded out for a refurbished model, simply costs Dell less if they happen to have the right configuration on hand.

If you say you need the firewire for work, and thats what you use your computer for, it will fly, just make sure they understand its for work

Cheers and good luck, I think you can pull it off.

alright guys, dells being weird with me.

ive chatted a few times with them to find my order number, and they say there isnt one

so i go log into the "support status and history" section of the site and see this posted today:

P464H BASE (ASSEMBLY OR GROUP)..., NOTEBOOK..., CPEN, P8600, 2.4, 1737 00001

0797C CUSTOMER KIT..., DOCUMENTATION..., AIRBRN 00001

from all i can tell its a studio 1737 with a 2.4 ghz processor....when should i find EVERYTHING out?
so it seemed you got a refurb studio 1737 glad to hear you got the firewire.

i can imagine the other specs being 2gb-4gb ram 160-320gb hard drive and integrated video card with 1440 x 900 resolution.

Studio 1737, 2.4G Penryn, 500G HD 7200RPM, 9 cell battery, Vista 64 home premium, 8G DDR2 RAM, backlit keyboard, WXGA+ screen... Not bad at all! The 1737 will give you the firewire port, but you won't have the subwoofer. You're going to have to decide how big a deal that is, but otherwise I think it's a great replacement. Overall it's a decent upgrade.

Hope you get it soon, I'm still waiting for my 1747, which was ordered on the 12th. If I were you I'd call them after you get it and bitch that it sounds like crap. Another user reported getting a pretty nice set of Creative speakers as a spiff to make up for it.

How can you tell if its a refurb or new?

It's a pretty huge RAM and HD upgrade, plus a much better processor. If they were building it he'd have less RAM, a smaller HD, and he wouldn't get a backlit keyboard.

the fedex tracking says ill get it today...so when i get it ill give you guys the full low down

heres a question: do you think asking for an upgrade to a 1747 where the specs would undoubtedly go down (ram, HD, processor) because of the sound is a good idea at all?
Thread Starter
so heres the rundown:

1. the computer is refurbished but it seems to run ok

from 100gb HD to 500gb HD
from 2gb ram to 8gb ram
from 2.1ghz processor to 2.4ghz
from ATI radeon mobility x1400 to ati radeon x3650

i dont know if i am going to keep it since the sound stinks...

also, the middle shift button has to be pressed down with a large amount of pressure to actually work...so thats a little frustrating.

so what do you guys think?

EDIT: i thought the screen was a little weird so i watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11SvDtPBhA on both this new one and my old one....the skin tone looks blotchy on the new one but on the old one it looks perfect....what should i do about this?
Call them back and complain and push them to get you what you want. Tell them you are extremly furstrated after waiting for so long, and buttons don't work etc. etc. I would really stress the fact that your old computer had the subwoofer...

Have you calibrated the monitor to make sure the colors are set right?

The sticky keyboard, they'll probably send a tech to replace.

As for the sound quality... Miley Cyrus? Seriously? Maybe you should try testing it with actual music.

You have a working computer in your hands... nothing to lose by pushing for better now. Complain until you're happy. The downside risk is losing the huge hard drive, video, and RAM upgrades.

overall i dont think im satisfied because of several things (tell me if im just being silly please)

1. colors on screen stink..this is not true life because people arent splotchy
2. sound stinks..my cell phone actually sounds better.
3. the battery port (where the battery sits) is very flimsy--the battery actually shakes very easily
4. the keys around and including the middle shift have to be pressed pretty hard.
5. the "authentic windows" sticker looks like it was on the bottom but was riipped off because its not there anymore (dont know if this is standard for refurbished or not, but if i reinstall windows i dont have a product key)

The good:
1. big HD--but i already have an external HD so its not really that big of an issue
2. big increase in RAM--if i got the 1747 it uses DDR3 ram which is infinitely better
3. slight increase in processor speed--dont really feel much difference
4. upgraded video card--havent really noticed this cus the screen stinks

i think im going to get on the phone first thing tomorrow with their customer care/warranty dept and work this thing out..i dont want to get stuck with a piece of junk.

** do you think its ok to refuse repair of this system if thats what they offer? i think it would be stupid to repair this one rather than just exchange it since its basically new to me.**

oh and that miley cyrus video was just to test the video really, even though it AND the song are AWESOME!

second "Update"

Just got off the phone with Dell. I gave them my 5 reasons for why this computer stinks...she started trying to "troubleshoot" and she said the motherboard would have to be replaced because of the battery thing so i said "I'm not replacing parts on a computer I have had for Six Hours" and she said lets do a replacement.

so she comes back and says ill get another 1737, then i pulled out the subwoofer situation and how the 1747 has it so she goes back to talk to get it approved

comes back with approval for the 1747 AND says it will have the same or better stats as the 1737, which means i keep the mega memory, HD, and processor speeds.

Thank you all for your help. goes to show that doing a little research gets you a really long way.

Does anyone know if theyre shipping out refurb 1747's? i wouldnt think so since its basically brand new to dell.
Well done! The 1747 is a very, very nice machine. That's what I'm getting for my replacement.

In the meantime, get prepared to wait a month or more... the i7 in the 1747 was just released on 9/23/09, I think the Radeon card in the computer is new as well, and mine has been "in production" now for over two weeks due to part backlogs. If you build one on the website, last time I checked the expected ship date was 11/13, and it appears to be pushing out day for day. I seriously doubt they have refurb 1747s at this point, unless they came from canceled orders and like I said, they're building mine from scratch.

At least you have a PC to use in the meantime... I have to wait for "borrowed time" on somebody else's.

Post stats when you get them, and stay away from that Miley Cyrus stuff... it'll rot your brain.
