Looking for Recovery Disc ISO's for Compaq 6820s

I've decided to sell my Compaq 6820s laptop and use the money to put towards buying a iPod Touch 64GB but I'm looking for a set of Recovery Disc ISO's to wipe the system clean before selling it on after backing up my data [for which I'll have to do it onto my other laptop by copying the data onto my other laptop then copy the data onto an external hard drive] as I can't access the recovery partition...

Why the need of a recovery disk if you just want to wipe it clean? Gpart Live CD can help you do that. Then sell it as drive wiped clean with COA key underneath the comp.

The thing is that the store where I want to sell my laptop will want to have Windows Vista installed on it which is why I need a Recovery Disk ISO... On another note, even though I've found the partitions for the OS Tools and Recovery areas of the HD [I placed the HD in an external case], I can't seem to find any files to make a recovery disc...

HP/Compaq locks their comps to allow 1 copy of recovery disks at delivery. Once this is being done, it is pretty tough to create another set without tinkering with it. You can search the section for more input about this.

This link will tell you how to recover if you still have the recovery partition intact on your drive.

Since my last post, I've installed Total Commander and I've found various folders in the Recovery partition; the files having been hidden without me realising it...

Now that I know that there are files in the recovery partition, can I make a recovery disc with the hard drive in an external hard drive caddy as even though I can access Vista with the hard drive in it on the original laptop, it doesn't work properly as I can't use the programs installed on it plus I wouldn't be able to access the Recovery Console if I wanted to if my installed programs don't work...

I am not certain if you can create a set of recovery disks outside the HP notebook. Have you checked and see if you can download and install the PC recovery management utility direct from HP?

ghn, I've managed to get into the Recovery Disc creator by visiting the link you provided and finding the CD Creator file in the Windows\SMINST folder which turned out to be the Rcovery Disc Creator. I've made a copy and I'm going to check out the sticky in this subforum to look at making a couple of spare backups...

On a related note, I take it that once I use GPart Live CD to wipe the drive clean, I can use the Recovery Disc to reinstall Windows Vista?

Post back here with your own process steps for other members. Would appreciate that very much.

I'll do a seperate post later today with how I made a copy of the Recovery Disc using an external hard drive caddy.

On another note, it's good to hear that I can use GPart Live CD to wipe my drive clean then use the Recovery Disc to reinstall Windows Vista.

EDIT: I take it that if I use my Recovery Disc to reinstall Windows Vista, that means the OS Tools and Recovery partitions will also be installed as well, or will I have to make backups of those and install them seperately?

1. I want to amend to my post above. If you us GPart and wipe the drive clean BUT leaving the recovery partition untouched, you should be able to revert back to the original state with the recovery disks.

Now I am not sure that the recovery disks would RE-create the recovery partition ;-)

I think I'd be safer backing up the OSTools and Recovery partitions onto my other laptop then copy them to my external hard drive and after that copy them to the HP laptop from there...

Not a bad idea
