Dell System Exchange

Thread Starter
My XPS M1530 laptop crashed a few weeks ago and after numerous tech visits to my house to replace the motherboard, screen and a number of other parts, dell has finally agreed to do a replacement.

Ive noticed that dell no longer makes the XPS M1530 and I was just wondering what I should be looking at as a replacement.

Here are the specs on my broken laptop. Rather than have dell overcharge me, I had upgraded the memory myself from 1GB to 4GB. Thanks in advance for any iput :

ugh! Sorry my post is so jumbled. My old system also has the 8600GT vid card. Don't see it anywhere in the specs

I'd imagine a Studio XPS 1640 or something like that...
I say the Studio XPS 16 would be an improvement. The Studio 15 has a weaker GPU so would not accept that as replacement.

Try contacting Chat Support for an order number and customer number, you should then be able to view the entire order.

Here are the full specs. Am I reading correctly that I now have an HD screen?? I never had that before. Hard drive is bigger too and processor also looks better.

Looks like the 3670 Radeon. I had an 8600GT in my M1530. Is this no good???

Maybe someone can chime in though as Im definitely no computer guru

Is the order date today's date? Also is your system in "PRE-PRODUCTION" or "IN PRODUCTION"? This is shown as you log in to "My Account", in the list with your most recent orders.
Thanks.

I'm waiting on a SXPS 13 exchange; Has been over a month.

Your GPU in the new laptop is a faster one by about 25%

I would say your getting a better laptop for sure

My laptop was apparently shipped yesterday. I now have my Purolator tracking number.

Its ground shipping from in the US though (im in Canada) so who knows how long that will take. This whole situation has been a massive headache. One would think dell would at least buck up and use faster shipping method.

Hope that this one isn't another lemon

Thanks for the input Dave.

Can you fill me in a bit more on what a GPU is, what my old M1530 had compared to what this new XPS1640 has? Im a bit computer illiterate here lol.

I had also upgraded my memory to 4gb ram from 1gb ram. I bought 2 x kingston 2gb 667mhz ddr2 modules.

Will I need to do this again with the new XPS 1640???

I would accept as a fair replacement. You are doing much better on CPU you said HDD is also. You had a HD screen before. Like I said I think a fair offer from DeLL.

Your 8600m GT was flawed this is a very close GPU likely a little better. But ATI's do not game as well as Nvidia's with similar 3DMark06 scores. ATI has DX10 minor plus. Your 8600m had GDDR3 if this ATI has GDDR3 then yea better if DDR2 then about equal. Except the 8600m is flawed so GMA950 is almost better.

You should be happy. I mean until it breaks? Just kidding.

Edit: GPU does your gaming. You are going from 256MB VRAM to 512MB VRAM. If you upgraded your RAM on your own have DeLL send it back. Send them the original.

No Kiddin.

This isn't the first issue I've had either. My HD crashed about 6mos ago. Im almost tempted to sell it and get a mac. They are just so damn overpriced though.

Would a windows7 upgrade be worthwhile?

I still have my old laptop. So I should remove the ram modules from the 1530 and install these on the new 1640??
Will it be a slight improvement?

dman34,
When was the order placed? Also, did they ship you a refurbished or a brand new replacement.
Thanks.
Your new laptop is DDR3 memory not compatible with your old laptop DDR2 memory
