When Im trying to force windows to install this driver (by selecting "let me pick from list... driver option) it lists
USB 2.0 1.3M UVC Webcam and 2 other drivers (2.0 and 2.0 VGA) but when selected says "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it" and then goes back to windows default driver which doesnt work

I have the feeling that Gateway needs an extra (specific version) app at start in combination with the driver to get this cam to work.

For some reason when I downloaded the synaptics driver for the touchpad it came with a driver for the webcam with the software. I installed that and it worked fine when I tested it. I never actually use the thing so I don't know if it has any issues with other apps, but trying it with the Gateway software it worked fine.

I downloaded it again and the camera driver didnt come with it this time. I really don't know how I got it the first time lol. I was all like "WTF " when it was there after I DL'd the touchpad driver. I still have a copy of the installer. The file is named D20255-001-001. I searched for that on Gateways half assed support page and all I got were matches to the description of the software, not a link to actually download it. Look inside of "c:/cabs" and see if you have that folder mysteriously sitting in there.

strange... I got P-171XL FX with Windows 7 x64 and this doesnt work. I your cam 1.3 too ?

Yep, the Chiconey 1.3 MP USB 2.0 camera. And I'm using the Vista x86 driver with no prob. Only problem I have is that after a few seconds it drops the brightness down to nothing and goes basically black, but it always did that to me under Vista too.

Im still having the same problem with webcam and today I noticed that my external cam (MS lifecam NX-6000) wont work with my gateway. I've read somewhere that it might be video card issue. Can u tell me what kind of driver you are using or provide a link to it please

Gateway just released the webcam driver update for the Chicany. Check it out here.

Not sure why you believe that the external cam issue is caused by a graphic card. Can you expand the problem you are having with it?

cheers ...

Ok for anybody else that is having problem with that I found the solution. I gave up at some point and I decided to use my external webcam i had from my laptop but ends up that even the other cam wouldnt work. At that point i knew there something else going on. I started to search the net and I found a guy that had a similar problem with external cam - I fallowed his steps and now both of the cams work just fine.

Here's what i did (for windows 7 64bit)
put your win7 cd into computer drive then select install. After that go into upgrade (this will not erase any of your data) after 20-30min of upgrade your computer will restart and all drives (even wemcab usb default driver) will work just fine.
I guess this set overwrites any system files with original win7

so that is how i got all mu drivers to work.

thanks for all your help guys
