E6400 when docked, NTLDR missing. works fine when not docked

I'm working on a Dell E6400 that has a peculiar problem. When the laptop is off, and connected to its Dell docking station, and I try to boot, I get "NTLDR is missing" errors and it will not boot. When not docked to the station, it will boot fine, and I can even connect it to the docking station AFTER booting up undocked.

Anyone seen this before?

it sounds like the dock profile is corrupt, would be my first guess. do you have Vista or XP on it?

second guess is the dock is mixing up the boot order of the BIOS and trying to boot it to a different partition or something

DO you have any hard drives connected to the dock? USB or otherwise?

boot order was looking at USB devices first, and of course there was a USB hard drive connected to the docking station. I'm glad it was simple.
