Inspiron 1526 blank screen after hibernation

My Dell Inspiron 1526 won't restore after hibernation.

After a recent Vista update the laptop was placed in hibernation mode before the normal 'restart to complete update' process. After a minute or so i press a button expecting to see a logon screen, instead the monitor was off, blank screen with no power. I presss every button but nothing happened. After a restart the monitor remains off but i can still hear 1526 checking the cd drive. I restarted several times trying the Fn+F8 option with an external monitor and pressing the up button while holding Fn but still the same.

1526 appear to be in a wierd state because i placed a XP boot cd and restart then hit Enter several times. If the backlight or inverter was the only problem then 1526 would boot from the cd as normal though i wouldn't be able to see. It doesn't, it simply power up, checks the cd drive then does nothing.

The multimedia buttons lights up when i press them and the fan is on.

I don't have the warranty paperworks.
How can i fix it?

But is your machine still in warranty?

If you're unsure of your warranty status, and you haven't already, create an account on dell.com and enter your service tag number as your default system. This will do two things:

1. Tell you the warranty status of your machine based on your service tag.
2. Give you an easy way to download the drivers for your machine and help you find support in their forums on your particular model. (not that their forums are particularly helpful)

You don't need the warranty papers... Dell keeps those according to the service tag.

Good luck!

The warranty is expired. I normally fix my own computers but this is a first. The problem appears to be Dell specific.

I also remove the battery and unplug the power cord then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, i reconnect the power plug but no difference. I tried that a second time holding for over a minute with no results.

Here is the code from my Fn+ON diagnostic test.

Cause:
The Microcontroller is handing control of the system to the processor. This code will persist if there is no processor detected.

Possible solutions are:
1. Reseating the processor.

2. Replacing the system board.

3. Replacing the processor.

Time to get my precision tools.

My diagnostic test gave the same result. However, I won't be able to take apart my computer until this weekend. Did any of the solutions you posted work for you?

I also have a inspiron 1526

solid, blinking, blinking
num lock, caps lock, scroll lock

My 1526 did the same thing. Changed the cmos battery and now it seems to be fine. This is not a process for the faint at heart but it can be done.

You had my issue or the hibernation issue?

My Inspiron 1526 is now doing the exact same thing.  When I push FN-On I get the Blinky - Solid - Solid display like above.  It takes anywhere from 2 to 50 tries before it will reboot, but when it does, it runs fine for weeks at a time.  I see someone posted that change the CMOS battery fixed this.  Has that been verified?  Anyone else gotten past this situation doing something else?

Thanks,
James

That is exactly what mine did. I changed the CMOS battery, and haven't had any problems since. Find a walkthrough for changing the battery and follow it to the T. It's a difficult process.

I was able to follow the directions and completely unbuild my laptop just to get to the CMOS battery.  It was a CR-2032.  I was able to replace it.  The old battery measured 1.2 Volts.  A new one of these says 3.0Volts, but the one I put in there measured 3.2Volts, so hopefully it lasts a long time.  Put the laptop back together and have had no trouble since.  I did call Dell Technical Support.  They of course had never heard of this, and one Indian there actually told me the laptop would boot up just fine with no CMOS battery installed.  He was very rude.  I ended up calling about three times, and then gave up.  They are pathetic as far as customer support goes.

By the way, did I mention Dell Technical Support is pathetic?

I still think it is ridiculous that Dell would sell a laptop with a pre programmed expiration date.  I mean it's irritating if the CMOS battery doesn't remember the time, but it's stupid that it won't boot up if the battery is dead.  FAIL!

I don't know if that is really BIOS related but I experienced a few brands/models in the past that would not boot if a dead/bad battery was present

cheers ...
