You talking about a BIOS password or a Hard Drive Password

Dell can help with a BIOS password, but they can not unlock a Hard Drive Password

unless the data on the hard drive is really important I would just buy a new hard drive

Data recovery service would be the only option which is very expensive

yeap hd password first i thought it was just a bios password but when i installed the drive in another laptop and gave me the same password message then i knew it was a hd password... i cant believe that hd company's are making a stupid chip to save password in the actual drive ....thanks

It is all but stupid. Those HDD passwords are that strong for 1 reason: safety.

I have set the HDD password on my laptop, that way if it gets lost or stolen they won't be able to see my data. It's not like a have top secret things there, but it still gives me some peace of mind.

Cheers!

Yeah, the ATA Password is part of the ATA spec. It writes the password to the firmware track on the hard drive. I think most data recovery places charge $500+ for data retrieval for forgotten HDD passwords. New drives are cheap, you're better off just buying another.

Looks like there is no option but to not buy Dell. If they stand behind their product and charge you for their password....they simply do not deserve the business of honest folks.

I failed to see why Dell (or any manufacturers) should be at fault if the password on the drive is being locked out? It is the same thing with the pin used for ATM, if one loses it or locks it - the only cleanest way is to cancel the card and re-apply anew.

BIOS recovery is one thing, but in business sense hard drive locks are users responsibility.

cheers ...

My friend did not password her HD...It just started to do that after she put windows on her hard drive. Since the password was generated by Dell...of course they should unlock it!! To charge someone for this is not good business. Obviously it seems systematic. I have read a lot in the past few days and I can see that something is amiss in many computers with the HD password.

Frankly, I will not pay for another bankcard either!!

cant you just update the firmware?
