Odd Windows 7 hardware incompatibility problem

I have a Seagate Free Agent Go external hard drive that has worked flawlessly with every operating system and every computer I have plugged it into... until now. For some strange and unsettling reason, it is not detected in the final version of Windows 7 on my computer (Asus Z71V notebook), even though it ran just fine in the beta and RC versions. Considering I backed up a lot of data and several programs on there, I am very concerned if I cannot retrieve it from Windows 7. If anyone has a suggestion of what I can do, I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

Okay, I figured out the problem. When I plug in the drive (connected via USB), there is a quick power surge on the USB port. While this wasn't an issue in the beta or release candidate versions of Windows 7 or in Windows XP or Vista, it apparently made the final version of Windows 7 shut down the affected USB port in a panic. In order to get my drive to work, I had to disable and then re-enable the affected USB port while the drive was still plugged in, thus preventing the initial power surge. It was a major annoyance and concern for several minutes while I was trying to figure out how to restore my backup files and programs from an inaccessible drive, but it's solved now.

Interesting to realize that Windows is still having issues now and then with USB ports and devices handling within its OS, dating back to XP.

It seems that I have to go through the disabling/enabling process every time I plug in my external drive. There's got to be a way to turn off the reaction that shuts down the port when a surge is detected...

Have you tried different USB ports Djembe, just for kick?

Well, I just asked about it on Microsoft Answers. ->link<- We'll see what they have to say.
