My 8887 has a Toshiba SD-2412 DVD/CDRW combo drive. Nero allows it to burn up to 24x, but I'd rate the speed as comparable to my old Plextor 12x on my desktop.
I use all sorts of blanks at work - TDK, Khypermedia, Memorex... all burn with the same results. At home I use unbranded Taiyo Yuden 700mb discs, rated at 48x (from www.rima.com
) and it's the same.
I just ran Nero CD Speed, and the drive starts out writing at 8x, then stabilizes at 12.06x. Near the end of the test, the drive jumps up to 16x, and Nero gives the drive an average speed of 12x burning.
It could be a number of things... the 24x rating could mean that the drive burns at 24x only when it reaches the outer edge of the disc... or it could be interference inside the laptop itself (I don't know laptop internals - are the data cables shielded?)
I didn't bring up the slow burning speed before because I tend to burn my things slower these days - VCDs and SVCDs at 8-12x, audio CDs at 4-8x and data CDs at 16.
Maybe someone will figure this one out and we'll all be burning at true 24x speed soon
