Questions regarding recent M17x purchase

Hey all!

I just bought a barely used M17x for a great price and I had a few questions. First, I have an express service number and a service tag number... Are these all I need for warranty use?

I mean when I call dell and ask them to replace something under warranty is all the information I'll need to give?

Secondly, the person that owned this laptop before me tricked it out really nicely EXCEPT that he opted for the 1440X900 resolution screen. WTF??? maybe he had bad eyesight and needed larger text or something. I notice that the screen has some pretty horrid light leakage out the bottom of the panel.

This leakage extends along the entire bottom and ruins any black content. My question is whether I can get this screen replaced under warranty? And if so, can I upgrade to the 1900X1200 (i assume for an additional fee).

any advice/experiences help.

Are the express service and tag number being registered to you? You might want to make sure that it is the case first.

cheers ...

so has anyone had experience with successfully swapping an M17x screen with a new one under warranty, due to screen non-uniformity?

thanks

Dell typically does not do that...how ever it would not hurt to call and ask.

First you must transfer the warranty into your name.

but what if i upgrade to complete care? don't they usually swap anything that you're not happy with?

yes...with the same part, not an upgraded part.

going from WXGA+ to WUXGA is an upgrade.

if they do decide to do the upgrade you will most likely end up paying $$$ for the screen.

Tpically I have replaced the screens myself from one's I bought on Ebay when faced with your situation..usually the much cheaper route.

Get the warranty coverage before we even discuss. I mean short of transferring or even upgrading to complete care all is just talk. First things first. But no they generally do not allow replacement upgrades at your discretion.

hmmm. I don't mind paying the cost to upgrade, would it not just be the same cost as if I were building it for the first time, and had the option of choosing the WUXGA for 150-200$ more?

Also, I have been reading that its a huge hassle to try to transfer alienware warranty. If my service tag says the warranty is with Dell (i.e. Dell next day service), would a transfer of warranty just be done via the dell transfer of ownership form?

thanks!

no the price is based on the "Spare parts price"

if you have a Service tag, and express service caode you can do the exchage online from the Dell.com site.

If you do the transfer using the laptop online it should be a simple process, as they auto detect the laptop

hey thanks alot. I appreciate the help, and cannot wait to get this thing up and running to its max potential! Any threads/websites I should visit to get an idea of what drivers I should be using for the 280gtx's?

Why don't you just try and use the stock driver first?

cheers ...
