Motorola Droid

I'm buying this on Friday. My first non-work smartphone purchase ever.

Had a flip phone/verizon since 2002... so I've had an upgrade for a while...I'm excited.

Anyone else considering this?

Two people in my department have this now. I can say this as an Iphone user and having played with the Pre.

Apps:
No comparison the Iphone wins here. You have alot of Verizon Vcrap branding and such but I expect this to get better

Touch sensitivity:
On par or better than the Iphone. For me the Iphone was the best touch screen. The Pre was the second best. Then came the others. Then came a rock followed by a piece of lint. Then came the Blackberry Storm

Capacity:
16gbs ... You can put what you want here and have it double as a thumb drive or an MP3 Player

Where it beats the Iphone is the battery and the adaptability. I have to jailbreak my Iphone to do what this does right out of the box. While I may get better apps and won't have to worry about giant V branding everywhere I will say that this phone rocks. I personally think the speaker sounds much better than the Iphone's, but people disagree with me. I do love the keyboard since its much easier to type faster when you can feel the buttons. I've gotten proficient in typing on the iphone so I can not knock it but I feel like I type faster with the keyboard.

It runs just as fast as a 3gs and has killer features such as night vision camera and 5mp.

The phone is about the same size (width wise) as an Iphone.

Let me know what else you want to know and I'll other grab my co-workers phone and let you know.

Steve.
Just as a follow up. I thought the phones were owned by the individuals, however they were not. Verizon Marketing was allowing us to demo the phones for 2 days to see if we would like to replace some of our older smart phones.

That's good to know. I've heard complaints about the camera, keyboard and the fact that it doesn't have multitouch out of the box. Apparently Apple has pattens on multitouch. But this does not mean it does not support multitouch from 3rd party mods.

Well from the 15 minutes I played around with it I can say the keyboard is better than that of some of the candybar phones. It is not as good as the Helio Ocean's keyboard but that is just my preference. The Camera takes great pictures. It is a little hard to use the software at first to use the camera (Options and such).
I did not try the multi-touch (Such as the zooming in Iphone). There was no need to. When I did touch the screen it was accurate and responsive and felt very Iphonish. The storm was like touching a piece of glass. It would never click where you wanted it to and always felt like I was straining to move from one point to another. Huge improvement for Verizon for this phone.

All very good news. I'm wondering what the final cost will end up being for the phone. I know it's $200 with a 2 year contract, but I think i get a discount for having an upgrade option.

Also, for anyone else interested in this phone, verizon is starting a new cancellation policy starting on the 15th. They've increased the fee if you cancel your service before the contract date. The fee decreases by $10 every month starting at $350

If you work for a Govt/Educational Entity you may be able to get a 10-20% discount (US only). I know (should say found out) that part of the package they were trying to sell us is a data plan similar to that of a blackberry or other smartphone.

If that is the case then I may start to do what I do with my Iphone and skype.

Yes my company does offer a 20% discount on the service plan, but I was hoping I'd get some money off the Droid.

So After 12 hours with this thing... it's the closest thing to an iphone anyone is every gonna find. The lack of out of the box multi-touch support is what hinders this thing as 2nd best. The screen is ****ing fantastic.

The keyboard, which was one of the negative features in most of the reviews online, isn't as bad as the reviews make it out to be. I'm coming from a Blackberry Curve, and I'd GLADLY take this keyboard over the keyboard on that BB. And you don't even need to use the keyboard if you want to. You can use the built in touch screen. Another negative of the phone right now is the lack of apps. 10,000 apps my ass. I can't even find a decent sports app. The last thing that sucks about this phone is the camera. Unless it's a perfect sunny day, this camera is the hardest thing to use on the planet.

The positives are, like I said, the screen, the built in Google account support, the Amazon store; which I used last night. It's awesome, if you select something to download while you're in 3G, and there's wireless available in your area, it will notify you that you should probably switch to the wireless to increase download time... ****ing awesome. You also don't have to charge it to your wireless account, you can input your Amazon user name and password.

You can download and install multiple apps at the same time. They install automatically for you. I love the draw pattern unlock, instead of a password. Switching between apps is SUPER FAST.

So far, a very positive experience. I've never been so excited about a phone before.

I'm looking for app suggestions.

Of course, personal presentation is always much better than the cold advertissment from the manufacturers I personally would like to see the finger in relation to the keys, in order to have a "feel" of how crowding (or not) of the phone.

cheers ...

If I am not mistaken, you can enable a flash and a night vision on the droid.
