Notebook CPU and GPU upgrade

Thread Starter
hi everyone ,

Notebook HP dv7 1199 ev
My motherboard is Compal 30f4 Version 99.67
I would like to upgrade my current CPU
Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53 GHz, Level 2 cache 6MB).

and graphic card
Nvidia GEforce 9600M GT

I have none experience moding a notebook before and i need some information.

-To begin with, how would i know if i can replace my processor, and what processors should be compatible with my system? Would a more powerful CPU cause problem to my system's cooling ability?

-The GPU is coming built-in with the motherboard? Can i update to any notebook-based GPU i want?
Maybe some GTX series Nvidia?

Please give me some help.
Thank you very much in advance.

Go to the main page of HP, choose configuration on your model and it will tell the different CPUs that you can pop in.

I don't believe that you can swap out GPU on HP machines without replacing the motherboard. As far as swapping out the board with another "model", it can be tricky and many times not worth the effort. Might as well getting another notebook altogether.

Thanks for your attention,

I have searched the hp site a lot but still won't find any information on upgrading my processor. Only information on replacing OEM parts.

I found this ,too.

http://h20141.www2.hp.com/Hpparts/Se...Number=FW842EA

in here says:
Intel Core 2 Duo processor - 2.53GHz (Penryn, 1066MHz front side bus, 6MB total Level-2 cache)

nothing more about specs of the processor in order to find something similar

i also thought of something else , my processor is a T9400
in this page i see a list of T series and normally a T9900 for example would be ideal for my laptop, am i right?

That was what I saw in the configuration page - T9900!

You have a socket "P" CPU any socket "P" will work. The T9550/T9600/T9800/T9900 will all fit and have the same thermal profile 35w TDP. The P9600/P9800 will fit an have lower thermal profile 25w TDP might make system run cooler and increase battery life slightly.

There are others like Quads but greater thermal stress and while will fit don't like extra heat.

Thanks for the information, could you tell me some more about quad?
I have read that they are less ghz and from this factor i suppose they wouldn't need cooling modification for my laptop. Is my socket compatible to any quad? A quad core should be definitely more powerful than my T9400 , am i right?

This exact item should work with my noteook?

That eBay item would work, but 350 quids? Ouch! Are you sure you don't want to save up for a new notebook?

I expect drop of prices when i7 mobile processors come to the market and spread out

my problem is that i purchased my laptop one exact year ago for 1500 euro now i can't sell it even for 800.

my only option is to keep it , either way its a very good laptop for what i want so considering i keep it and dont afford multiple laptops or desktop, i will upgrade it as far as my motherboard allows.

Just wait for the perfect momment for CPU purchase

I know what you mean with the depreciation of the notebook value. I prepped up many of my old comps, out of nostalgie And they do hold up their end of system performance.

Hold out for the price drop or look for notebooks for parts.

Yes you have right i will update the thread.
Now that you tell it was very stupid of me not to take photos. It was so confusing to dissasemble my laptop that other users could use my information. The truth is i reached a point i started considering seriously buying another notebook because i was sure this one would never work again! LOL

I dissasembled the whole notebook's parts, i could only gain access to CPU when i had the motherboard itself to my hands.

If i had not my father's help now hp would be history
Thank god we assembled it again only with 3 screws left (somewhere we missed assembling them ) and works perfectly!

My recommendation for other users wanting to make a CPU change on this laptop. Do it but prepare for LOTS of work and attention. Keep notes of every little part and screw because you have to dissassmble every single part of the notebook!

Only 3 screws being left out? That was very good for the first major work-out

I take it that your revived comp is flying pretty high now ;-)

Yep the difference is enough to make my effort worthy!

Now 8gb ram and hdd's!!!

4gig ram modules are still pretty high

Tip for the new guy? CPU's do not drop in price when newer and better are introduced. The limited controlled supply is responsible. Supply and demand you know? DDR RAM costs more than DDR2? Consider.
