Vaio PCG-FRV26 no power

I've been all over the internet, gathering whatever info I can find, but I'm stuck. It's a Vaio PCG-FRV26 (PCG-9J5L) that just shut down one day, had a very slight 'burn' smell & will not power on, no lights. Opening it up it was full of dust balls & the fans were filthy - cleaned it real nice with vacuum & compressed air. I replaced the power jack, had it tested & there definitely is power to the board, also had the AC adapter/charger tested & it's good. I also played with various combinations of RAM chips in & out, re-set button, on/off with adapter & battery in/out combinations, holding on button variations etc. Still no lights or power. I've opened it up 3 times now, everything looks new/intact/great.

I have a PDF manual for this series, but cannot find the CMOS battery in the laptop! I don't think the manual is that great, not enough info, detailed explode schematic is not enough, tricky to follow, says where the CMOS/RTC bat is but I can't find it. Is it under the motherboard? do I have to remove MB?

If laptop did overheat - can I re-set it? Can anyone give me some info that could tell me what to do next? or what it could possibly be at this point? Thank you so much.

Have you tested with just a functioning battery? Read it nowhere in your post.

With a good input power source you should at least see the LED, and swapping out the CMOS battery would not help much. Could be under your motherboard.

cheers ...

please be helpful

If I had a functioning battery perhaps I would have tested it - but with no power it won't charge the battery I have, & buying a new battery to test it at this stage seems stupid. No LED's, no power & no lights like I said. No offense but above post not very helpful - I've read several places that re-setting RTC/CMOS bat did help people - I just want to try to re-set it as a possible option because right now I am stuck. Any one else have a better suggestion?

please be clear

Sorry that you were disappointed with the reply. Just because you don't have a battery to test to eliminate that part of the equation, you cannot assume that you would not need to look and be sure about it.

And how can one read your mind that you would not want to go that round (with the battery), rather than forgetting doing it, if you did not make clear in your post?

With no power in as you mentioned, I would not believe that resetting your cmos would help, as in my previous post.

Better suggestion than what you want to know where the CMOS battery situates? Try underneath the motherboard as you suspected?

cheers ...

Honestly shut down and burning smell? Nothing happens when powered on? Sorry if bad news is not helpful but? Resetting the CMOS is pointless. If you are lucky and the burn is just from the power connection on MoBo look at it. But the bad news is it sounds like MoBo is fried. Furthermore MoBo's are not hand soldered so hand soldered repairs are not easy or possible. MoBo's are swappable. I have done hand soldering on MoBo's but some are impossible others not easy.

Try not to blame the messenger!

CMOS batt is a complete waste of time with what you describe. You do not even need a CMOS to fire up a computer. It borders on asking about power steering when your car will not start? Sorry.

First - Flaming someone (and a long term member here) who was merely trying to help is not going to get you much response.

I agree there not much point looking at the CMOS battery, it has no effect on booting up, it merely retains the BIOS settings.

The issue is most likely with the DC power circuit. and smell usually means a componant has fried.

It is possible it was a thermal fuse that popped, so if you can find that on your schematic try looking into that.

But most likely you need a new mobo.

Good Luck

no flame

well actually i do keep checking back to see if there is anything i can work with. my apologies if flaming was read into my frustration here.
i'm still at it when i have time, will certainly let you know how it goes. looking into finding a mobo for this puppy, still looking... any hints for cheap ones would be cool. if i find a used mobo i wouldn't know if it was fried too would i?

thank you guys

Not unless you see obvious damage or you are a trained tech with equipment and detailed service manual. The old fashion way is put it in and see if it works.

Unfortunately expensive. If it doesn't work you don't even know for certain MoBo issue?

finally evidence

time for a new mobo unless somebody does 8 pin IC soldering - found a blown PQ16 microchip next to the CMOS battery after completely removing the mobo & checking the underside.

Sorry to hear. But at least you know.
