Stuttering sound (Winamp)

post #1 of 11

Hey guys,

So I installed Win7 on my desktop (laptop will follow) and I have a problem with the sound. Sometimes when Firefox loads heavy web pages, the sound in Winamp just stutters.

I updated the drivers to the latest ones using Windows Update for my Creative SB X-Fi Extreme Audio but it only partly solves the issue: stuttering still happens now and then. I also moved my sound card to a different PCI port (to avoid IRQ conflicts).

Any ideas on this? Thanks!

Sounded like resources conflict than hardware issue. Were you streaming with WinAmp? Is WinAmp used as extension of Firefox? Firefox version? Winamp updated? What is the antivirus? ...

- I'm playing local mp3s;
- I'm using Winamp 5.56 (latest version) and I don't have it as an extension of Firefox;
- Firefox is 3.5.5;
- my av is Kaspersky 9 (2010), with up-to-date definitions.

Thanks...

Take a look if:

. there is a patch on Winamp

. Using this setting:
General Preferences;
Priority Class = High
General Preferences --> Playback;
Playback Thread Priority = One Tick Less Than "Highest (default)"

. disable "wav" referencing in within Winamp.

You might want also giving VLC a try.

- hmmm, what do you mean by "patch on Winamp" and "wav referencing"?

- I'm using the settings you advised, I'll see if it changes anything.

Thanks, I'll keep investigating the issue. In the worst case, I'm thinking of replacing my sound card with an Asustek one.

Or use an older version of WinAmp.

So I've disabled my Creative sound card and switched to the onboard one on my Asus P5B Deluxe mobo.
Things are better now. It works fine 99% of the time I'd say.
I guess I will stay away from Creative hardware in the future (used to love them but their drivers are just a pain...)

Ehhh, it turns out the sound works fine but randomly stutters. This is really annoying me...

Try with an older version of WinAmp, review the buffer setting. Or give another media player like VLC a shot.
