XPS M1710 vs Studio XPS 16

Hey guys.

I have a XPS M1710 that has crapped out on me. Dell is offering me a replacement, and apparently it's going to be a refurbished Studio XPS 16. I'm still waiting for the phone call with the details about the specific unit they plan on putting swapping mine with, but I wanted to know if you guys think this is an acceptable trade? The screen is smaller and I just don't think it's fair that I have to accept a laptop that has a screen that is smaller than 17 in, but Dell no longer offers 17 in gaming systems. Am I being ungrateful?

Someone else, is getting screwed this way. Search, Woodstock. A smaller screen does not compute. Consider other upgrades that are being offered also.

I think that is the new Dell tactic. XPS 16 as a replacement with some sort of sweets to go with it. Larry is right, Woodstock has been in the fight for over 4 months, and the XPS 16 seems to be the lousy choice for him at the moment.

cheers ...

I really feel for woodstock. I can't believe the BS they put him through. I still don't have the specs for this replacement system, but I know it will be a XPS 16. I'm not going to accept that. I've been reading all of the posts about replacements for the M1710 and I'm not sure what I should say when I tell them that the XPS 16 isn't equivalent to my M1710. I don't have a maxed out system, in fact, I only have the 7900GTX, and that's only because the 7950GTX wasn't available when I purchased this system. They HAVE to give me something with a 17 in screen, correct? The XPS 16 isn't even advertised as a gaming system on their website, wtf??? I've been out of the laptop specifications loop for a while and I just have no idea what to say when they try to force me to accept this other than the screen is smaller, the resolution is obviously smaller, the GPU is integrated on the 16 (is this correct), and the memory architecture is 128 bit, whereas the GTX is 256. Is this information correct?

Thanks for any help that is provided!

Other than the smaller screen, the new XPS16 is quite powerful. Look at all the specs here:

I'd consider everything but the GPU and screen on the Studio XPS 16 to be an upgrade from the M1710. My view:

CPU: SXPS has i7, easily a massive upgrade

RAM: SXPS has DDR3, again upgrade

HD: Meh. HDD speed hasn't really changed that much since the M1710, not counting the SSD (which I presume you can fit in the M1710)

Screen: SXPS has the LED 1080p screen option which I've heard is very nice, though I still don't like the decrease in screen size squeezing all those pixels

GPU: Here is where the SXPS falls short. I bought my M1710 for high resolution (read: 1200p) gaming, and I am not sure the memory bandwidth through the 128-bit bus on the ATI 4670 is going to cut it. I haven't seen any benchmarks with this card at anything above 720p, so until I do, I prefer to err on the side of caution and say that card isn't meant for high resolutions, hence why the system is advertised as a "multimedia" and not a "gaming" machine. The other upgrades do not mean much if the GPU is not up to the task.

Just my $.02

no matter how you comapre it, the XPS16 is NOT a same or better replacement for a M1710/M1730 gaming laptop Period!!!!

I currently own an XPS 16 and to say that it isn't a gaming system would definitely be false. Mine has a T9600 in it, 4gb DDR3, ATi 4650 and a 500gb 7200rpm hd and it is by all means a gaming laptop, I would think that it should very likely performance wise outperform the M1710.

Ahh and as it turns out, is indeed better than your system at least in terms of graphics performance. Processor definitely out does yours, the HD is easy to make comparable, ram is much faster, the screen is the only thing you can argue with...but to be honest I don't really see why you should feel the need, the screen on the Studio 16 is honestly one of the most gorgeous computer screens I've ever laid eyes on.

Can you give some examples? Any benchmarks at 1080p would be greatly appreciated!

As of right now, I can only forward you a link to another website that gives graphics comparisons

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-...ist.844.0.html

But I'll see what I can do to benchmark the card on a few games =) modern warfare 2 will be easiest since I happen to love playing that these days!

I was offered the Studio XPS 16 with alot of nice upgrades including blu-ray, i7 cpu etc. but I told them that it wasn't a gaming machine, the screen was smaller and that I had dual video cards with SLi so they cancelled that one and ordered the Alienware. The 1st one was cancelled but I have another one in production so hopefully it will be here in the next week or so. If you feel that the system they are offering you is not the same or better than what you have than tell them that.

I've seen that list, and this one:

But I can't find the explanation of what settings i.e. resolution all benchmarks are at. Therefore, anything you provide I will take as the baseline for the card (given, of course, your other specs).

OT: How goes MW2? Is it everything you were hoping it to be? I'm waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday to catch up on game purchases (though Wolfenstein for $30 at Best Buy was really tempting this past week).

I await your holy benchmarks... if you can steal yourself away from MW2 long enough to post.

i too am getting an 1645... mw2 is bad ass! hope the xps 16 plays it well
