Benchmarking question

First Ill give my specs: P4 3.0, 1024MB PC3200, 60gig/7200rpm, ATI 9600. 15.4 screen runnng on 1680/1050. My 3DMark 03 score has been high 2500s. Thats fine. Another thing is that my power strip is a little messed up now and i think im gonna have to reinstall it. I cant clock over 140 in either option.

For fun, because I had benchmarked with 3DMark01 on my old desktop, I decided to give it a try on here to see how they compared. My Desktop config was: AMD 2800 Barton(2.08ghz) 333fsb, Corsair XMS PC 3200 512MB 400fsb, 80gig 7200 w/ 8mb cache, Asus 87n8x mobo, and ATI 9700 Pro AIW, viewsonic vx500 15" flat screen @1024 x 768. My Area 51m score on 3D-01 was 9000. My old desktop was like 14000. Now I know theres a gap between the video cards, but they are both 128MB cards. But the processor is better in the notebook. Plus I had less ram in the desktop too. What I would like to know is, where is this (huge) gap between the two systems? Is the mobil graphics card that much less powerful than the desktop version? I wouldve thought that my AW would at least come close to the desktop. Ive read the posts on increasing the score, and ive done most of the steps, with minimal improvement in the score. Im down to like 20 services running when I last ran the test, but that only gained me like 20 pts on 03. Maybe its just the powerstrip problem, i see you can get big gains from changing the settings , and like i said, i cant change mine. Any ideas?

- The default clock speed for my 9600 on powerstrip is engine 351 and memory 202 so powerstrip might be slowing you down a bit..however on those clock settings my 3dmark 03 score is 2680 and the highest i've gotten to is 3020 with overclocking.

right, for some reason, something happened and the highest it will let me go is 140 for either one. I did the scan option, (not sure what im doing with this, wish it came with instrucitons) and that let me back up to like 180 max, but that caused strange things to happen.

You probably have PowerPlay enabled in the ATi control panel and are running on battery power.

Make sure Powerplay is turned off. It will throttle the GPU back to low 100's.

Have you updated your Powerstrip? I couldn't change my settings either until I updated.

There is a box you need to check on the Powerstrip GUI to allow the sliders to move.

The powerplay drops the clock to save power on battery, trying to overclock with PP enabled and on battery causes conflicts...it caused mine to crash. Disable powerplay and then run powerstip on AC power and tell the program to rescan the vid card to reset the default clock settings.

No Im running on outlet power. I wouldnt run a benchmark on battery. But Ill try the power play thing.

How do u update powerstrip? Thought they had to email it to you or something.

you can download the program for free of the internet. google Powerstrip and it will come up. You can get it from the Entech website...don't remember the address exactly. If you DL it, the alien icons for AlienAdrenaline will go away, Otherwise...just call tech support and tell them you need the setup file and you'll have it in minutes.

It could be that you started powerstip for the first time, which is when it sets the clock defaults, while you were on battery. To undo that, do what I said earlier.

Ok i seemed to have fixed the power strip problem. Disabling power play was the answer, my clock settings are back to what came with the machine I think, 351 and 202.5. Ran the 2001 again and gained 300ptst so im at 9300 now and the 03 score pretty much didnt change at all. Only had 16 processes running too. Oh well.

Does anyone have an answer for the difference in the two computers' scores? Wheres the Alienware lacking compared to my desktop?

It's the video card. Mobile cards just lack the power of desktop counterparts. I get the same(ish) numders for 01. so you're pretty normal.
