Hard disks upgrade issue on my laptop.

Thread Starter
hi,

I have 2 hard disks pre-nstalled on my laptop.
They are exactly this item: http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?ID=3288986

I would like to know if there would be a problem to replace them with 2 disks of higher speed (7200rpm).

And what else should i notice to ensure compatibility for my laptop.
Thank you in advance.

You should not have issues upgrading up to I think 500GB's. Just get a 2.5" form factor SATA HDD SATA2 or SATA 300 (same thing) would be best SATA or SATA 150 (same) would also work.

ok,

in many sites with hard disks i see hard disks i would like to buy with these specification you tell me (serial ata 300, 2.5'' e.t.c.)

but i see a bit diferent physical dimensions

for example

based on the url i gave with the hard disks i have now could you compare the specs and tell me if can buy this hard disk?
http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?ID=3588508

i see they have a difference in field "form factor" for example
my preinstalled is internal hot swap and this one is "plug in module"

As powerpack mentioned - a 2.5" form will do. The disk mentioned should fit into your notebook nicely.

One is ST9500420ASG, the other is ST9500420AS

As far as specs and performance concern? None that I can tell.

ok!
another question earlier you mentioned about 500 gb's disks should be ok...

would be a problem to buy larger disks?

Current highest drive size is a 640gig, I see no issue with going as high as you want. Personally I prefer staying around 320gig drive and use an external for back up and personal data.

Personal preference and needs determine how large a drive you want to install.

Damn they are so cheap this is the temptation to get a huge hdd...

so a 320 or 500 gb's OS and a 500gb data should be fine, right?
the basic reason im doing the modification is that that my current disks are 5400 rpm and 8 mb buffer...

what about your experience of friends' feedback with seagate as a brand ?

Thank you very much for your time

I own and use Seagate drives, among others (WD, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung ..) I have yet experienced any negative performance myself. Saying all this, some peoples have more luck with one brand over the others Just don't let some negative (or even positive) opinions to influence in hard drives buying selection.

Yes, I would always go up to 7200rpm where/when I can. It is just much quicker I think.

This is great news again, then.
I don't know if you remember me but i think we were discussing about a T9900 processor upgrade on my dv7 1199!
For the record, i made the upgrade and works great.

Now i have the hdd's left and the ram's.

That is great new. Din't happen to take some pics? You might want to update your other thread to keep other members informed of your successful upgrade.

Glad to know that NBF can be to your source of information.

Yes you have right i will update the thread.
Now that you tell it was very stupid of me not to take photos. It was so confusing to dissasemble my laptop that other users could use my information. The truth is i reached a point i started considering seriously buying another notebook because i was sure this one would never work again! LOL

I dissasembled the whole notebook's parts, i could only gain access to CPU when i had the motherboard itself to my hands.

If i had not my father's help now hp would be history
Thank god we assembled it again only with 3 screws left (somewhere we missed assembling them ) and works perfectly!

My recommendation for other users wanting to make a CPU change on this laptop. Do it but prepare for LOTS of work and attention. Keep notes of every little part and screw because you have to dissassmble every single part of the notebook!

The larger than 500 GB 2.5" HDD's are slightly larger (height) than the normal 2.5's so cannot fit in all notebooks. Since I don't know yours I mentioned.

Hot swappable is a feature of SATA I believe. As such all have. Technical specs on these sights seem to be written by the marketing departments. So what they list is not always apples to apples if you know what I mean? The plug in module is hot swappable (unless it is your primary) and your hot swappable is a plug in module. SATA plugs are standardized for notebooks.

Thanks for the information i understand what you mean!
I am sure that 2x500gb would be great and i have found great deals for them.

So , i unplug the old disks, plug the new ones , insert windows cd in the drive and get ready for installation!

Sounds like you are good to go. And yea 2x500 sounds nice!
