Black screen and no audio with Windows 7 on an A51 m5500

Thread Starter
I decided to take the plunge and install Window 7 Ultimate on my old reliable Area 51 m5500 running Vista, but I'm having issues with the Nvidia 6600 drivers for Win 7 that I have found. When I install the Nvidia 6600 drivers from the Windows update site or the ones bundled in the NBF MobileForce drivers package Se7en I version 190.38 I get a black screen soon after the laptop boots up. I'm able to see the Windows 7 is starting logo soon after it boots, but instead of getting the logon screen after the startup process ends... I get a black screen. The display works fine when I flip the switch to use the Intel graphics hardware and reboot... but I really need the Nvidia enhanced graphics performance. I was trying to find and install the old Nvidia drivers that I used under Vista, but I installed those so long so ago that I forgot where I got them.

The sound drivers that were installed during the Window 7 install process don't work either. Under Device Manager-> Sound and Video I can see a High Definition Audio Device and a Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device. I think the drivers that used to be installed were for a Realtek Audio device. I have unistalled the drivers and reboot it, but Windows 7 insists on installing the above mentioned drivers that don't work.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on what to try to fix these problems... Thanks.

Thanks qhn, I tried the LaptopVideo to go with the modded INF file, but I ended up having the same result. Last night I got a hold of an LCD monitor connected to the external VGA connector and it works. I can see the Windows desktop screen via the Nvidia Driver-adapter. The issue is that Windows 7 is not recognizing the Laptop's LCD display after it loads the Nvidia drivers. While connected to the external display under Device manager -> Monitors I can see only one display listed (Generic PnP Monitor) which is the external monitor that I have connected. No Laptop LCD Monitor is listed. I even looked under the NVIDIA Control Panel under Multiple displays and only the external display is recognized. I even tried the option for Rigorous Display Detection, but the NVIDIA software does not discover the LCD Monitor of the laptop. I also tried the Windows Key-P and FN-F4, but given that the LCD has not been recognized by the OS nothing happens. I found a "similar" problem listed in the Win7 forums here: http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-c...y-problem.html the information here lead me to try an external monitor, but not to a solution to my problem. Btw, is there any way to Force-Add a Monitor device to Window 7? When I try adding a Legacy Device manually there are no options listed to add a display/monitor. Again, the laptop LCD monitor with the NVIDIA drivers and Vista was working fine. The laptop display also comes on and displays the animated Window 7 Starting color logo during the Windows startup process. When I switch to the Intel display adapter the monitor works fine. Here some relevant details .
Area-51® m5500
Processor: Intel® Pentium® M 760 2.0GHz 2MB L2 Cache 533MHz FSB
Display: Alienware® m5500 15.4" WideXGA 1280 x 800 LCD
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600 with 256MB RAM
Sound Card: Intel® High-Definition Audio
BIOS Ver. 2.03W (Is there a later BIOS than this?)

Any other suggestions?

Strange that you cannot use the Vista driver for W7. I don't see how one can add the internal LCD to the device list, since this is a machine controlled event.

Want to give our own NBF MobileForce driver a test drive?

qhn, in my initial post I mentioned that I had tried the NBF package Se7en I version 190.38. Is there another (a specific) NBF package that'd like me to try besides this one? I can't understand why Win 7 sees the laptop Monitor at startup and displays its starting windows message on both the laptop LCD and the external monitor for about 20 seconds, but it does not list the laptop display under devices->monitors after the system comes up. It's like the Laptop LCD monitor is no longer there.

I am wondering if it is worth a shot (and pain) to reinstall Vista and then perform an upgrade, not clean-install as you mentioned in your OP.

And GenericPnPMonitor device is correct when W7 sees the LCD as the main monitor, or any main monitors.

Thanks again qhn, I found what will (hopefully) be a temporary solution for me. see post #18 in this thread

One has to close the lid and re-open it (Just suspending the laptop won't do) and then as if by magic the laptop LCD is displayed as an additional monitor under device manager. It's a bit a pain, because it might need to be reconfigured when you reboot... but I guess it'll have to do for now. Maybe if other people report this bug... MS will address it in a future fix.

Any suggestions on how to solve the audio driver problem?

That is an interesting fix - just closing and opening the lid. Hey, if it works I am sure that the next W7 update would fix it.

Audio - one or 2 suggestions:

Good lucks,

Ok, I guess I can move on. The Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R2.36 solved my audio problem. I can now continue to "try" to install the rest of the apps that I had on Vista Ultimate on Windows 7 Ultimate. I "might" start another thread if I run into any other issues "unrelated" to the NVIDIA and Realtek drivers.

The issue with the NVIDIA driver just requires one to open and close the lid... no need to reconfigure the display settings after rebooting. I ended up leaving the NVIDIA Forceware driver ver. 195.55 which I got via LaptopVideo2go installed. Is there any advantages/disadvatanges using this driver as compared to the one that's downloaded from Windows Update?

Thanks for the help qhn.

Glad to hear that it works out. I would just leave the GPU driver alone unless you experience some screen malfunction (?) and if you are into gaming.

Keep track of your W7 experience and share with us. And sure, just yell (post) when you have a chance.

Hi tamanaco
You may have success installing the drivers in Compatibility Mode for Vista. Please visit this link for a procedure: http://bit.ly/B0tCG .
Hope this helps

The lid trick is not working for me. I am going to pull my hair out. Please if anyone has found out anything more on this please chime in.

Don't mean to hijack

Mine is a Uniwill 259 with Alienware Lid, 2.0ghz, 8600GT, OCZ core SSD. I am having the exact same problem.

You are not hijacking any threads. Glad to see that you browse the forum for issues/resolution first.

Have you tried with some above recommendations of drivers and clean installation?

cheers ...

Yeah I have tried everything. Anyone that can edit or modify drivers could definitely fix this problem. Like Omega and the others. But of course I don't know them. Please anyone out there that might have fixed this chime in.

I might have to get my m5500 out of storage and try to install Win 7 on it just to see if I run into any issues. Mine still has the 6600 video card, however I was thinking of upgrading to the 8600 that is a suitable replacement. (That may have to be a project for another time since I'm going to be in Mississippi for a year)

I just want to say that I wish I would have found this thread days ago. I had the same exact problems and found the lid solution on my own. I will be testing out the recommended audio solution tonight. Thank you, everyone, for your contributions!!

I had this machine myself quite some time ago, and I remember that the black screen problem was utterly depended on with which GPU-Adapter you initially installed Windows7, 6600 go or Intel GMA.

I'm not sure which way the correct one was, but my guess would be that you'd have to install it on Intel GMA and then flick the switch to ext. grafix, but it could also have been the other way around. Which way did you do it?

I did it GMA first, and everything worked fine.

Am I reading this right? If I would have installed a different driver first, I wouldn't have to shut/reopen the lid?

Side note, I downloaded the most recent Realtec audio driver (from the URL in qhn's post), and that fixed my sound problem. Huzzah!
