XPS M170 Go 7800GTX - Dead?

Hiya,

I am new to the forums, I have read a bit and I now have a short question. It relates to this video.

http://cyberx2002.co.uk/VIDEO0003.mp4

Having read a few topics, I take it my 7800GTX has died? I've only had the laptop for about 2 months before it died, so what options do I have now?

Thanks for any replies

This one does not look good Is the notebook under warranty? Yes - call in. No? Try to pick up a spare GPU somewhere.

If no longer under warranty, you can also give the "baking" a shot. We have a few threads here regarding this subject.

cheers ...

Hi,
well, it's no longer under warranty, I was looking for another 7800 GTX on ebay, but it would cost me near enough as much as I paid for the laptop.

Perosnally, I don't feel confident enough about baking, I will ask a good friend of mine, maybe he could help.

Apart from that, I am considering selling as faulty and getting a brand new one...

Thanks for the advice though.

Does not hurt at the moment to go for the baking. Just don't go crazy about it. If you want to sell it, sell it in parts. It will be worth much more than just selling a dead unit, my opinion. Good lucks.

cheers ...

+1

There's always a hammerhead out there who's dropped it and needs a new screen/chassis/keyboard and doesn't want to buy shares in Dell to get it. Memory, disks and CPU are reasonably generic. eBay is your friend.

just watched the video definitly look like something that baking could solve

Yep bake it, mine still works today after onetime baking

Also remember there is a person on Ebay who properly rebuilds these cards for around $160 - $180 dollars

Its another option for you.

There has been some good feedback so far on this option

Another less expensive alternative you may want to consider is a 6800 Go "vanilla" that was the upgrade on the Inspiron 9300. You can pick these up cheap (100 dollars or less), and they are a drop replacement for your card. If you transfer the heat-sink from you 7800 it's possible to overclock it near to or equal to 6800 Ultra levels.

At the time when these laptops were newer, some were posting here about being able to directly flash the BIOS of the "Ultras" onto the "vanillas" to get the added performance at a fraction of the price. Again, I say this with the caveat that this can only be attempted with the beefier heat-sink from either a 6800 Go "Ultra" or 7800 Go "GTX".

I know personally, that this possibility is one of the reasons I've kept my 6800 "vanilla" around as a spare, in case my 7800 GTX ever bit the dust.

I hope this helps.

Ciao

Very rarely you can OC the 6800 vanilla to the Ultra level but its still a great overclocker. The only thing I want to mention is that you cannot flash the 6800 ultra bios onto the 6800 vanilla.

Hiya, and thanks for all the advice, so far we have tried reflowing with a heat gun, and so far it runs fine, I am still considering selling it though, as I realised it is just too big for my needs. Will probably try buying something new from Dell, any suggestions?
I guess the suggestion depends on what you use your laptop for. If you're a gamer, swapping the 7800gtx for anything else will cost you in frames. Also considering that the ebay price for the 6800 vanilla and GTX is not very low either, staying with the 7800gtx may be the way to go. You never know how bad you'll need it in the future.

The 6800 vanilla is an excellent card, though. The 6800 GTX runs hot as hell in my experience.

I think dgcaste means the 6800 ultra not the 6800 gtx. Anyway, it sounds like the OP is thinking about selling his laptop, not just his videocard.

Yes I absolutely did mean that. Sorry for the confusion
