but not here...

How do I fix this?

Try uninstalling the driver and then connecting to the printer. Windows 7 should then recognize an unknown device and load the correct printer driver. If that doesn't work, try downloading and installing your specific printer driver from Brother's web site.

Hi Djembe - is your suggestion to 1) safely remove the printer, then 2) uninstall the Brother software, and then 3) plug printer back in and let W7 drivers install themselves for the device? Will Windows then support all functions (fax/copy/print/scan) for this printer other than low ink warnings, including the new Fax and Scan utility found in W7?

I should point out that this printer has slots for CF and SD cards, which may account for an earlier anomaly in Vista where it registered itself as a "removable storage device" with its own drive letter.

Yes, that is my suggestion. My Canon printer was detected and the driver was installed automatically, including features, by Windows 7. It's worth trying to see if it works with your printer as well.

Removed the printer, uninstalled the Brother software, rebooted, and reconnected the printer. Windows 7 installed drivers. Device Manager and Acer's system summary still show this as a HDD device, so no change with that.

Device Manager still has this entry in both imaging and disk drives. There is a disable and uninstall option at both places, but it seems like it shouldn't be necessary or desirable to force this.

Windows 7 is correctly listing your printers "Digital Media Card Drives" (quoting the Brother support page listing printer specs.) as drives. They don't show when you look in My Computer, because by default My Computer doesn't show missing removable disks.

There's nothing wrong, all working as expected. Try sticking in an SD card or something, see if it suddenly shows in My Computer

Nicely done--mystery solved.

Wanna hear more from you in the future!
